'Gossip Girl's' blogger revealed in series finale

By Jesse Spero, Access Hollywood

Kristen Bell might have voiced ?Gossip Girl?s? iconic ?XOXO? voiceover for the past six years on the CW series, but who was actually the writer behind the juicy dirt that wreaked havoc on the Upper East Side?

(SPOILER ALERT!)?

Photos from AH: Blake Lively: From Hollywood To The Upper East Side!?

Monday?s series finale was filled with a slew of major events, including two weddings: Blair (Leighton Meester) married Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Serena (Blake Lively) married Dan (Penn Badgley) ? but the biggest twist happened when we learned that Gossip Girl actually turned out to be a Gossip Guy!?

Penn Badgley?s Dan Humphrey character (AKA Lonely Boy) was the person behind the blog.?

Photos from AH: Penn Badgley: From ?Gossip Guy? To Big Screen Star?

?The Upper East Side was like something from Fitzgerald or Thackeray ? teenagers acting like adults, adults acting like teenagers, guarding secrets, spreading gossip all with the trappings of truly opulent wealth. And membership into this community was so elite you couldn?t even buy your way in. It was a birthright ? a birthright that I didn?t have. And my greatest achievements would never earn it,? Dan is heard saying in a voiceover.?

?All I had to compare it to was what I read in books. But that gave me the idea: I wasn?t born into this world ... maybe I could write myself into it. I overheard enough conversations to mimic the voice of the Constance girls, but every writer needs his muse and it wasn?t until that photo of Serena in the white dress that I knew I had something strong enough to actually create a legend and launch a website.?

?Within weeks I was getting dozens of emails with stories about Upper East Siders, so I posted them anonymously. And then I got more. Before long it was a monster. Everyone was sending tips ... When Serena came back from boarding school, I wrote my first post about me, Lonely Boy, the outsider, the underdog. I might have been a joke but at least people were talking about me.??

Photos from AH: ?Gossip Girl? Bad Boy Ed Westwick?

The news was met with some of the show?s trademark drama.?

?Gossip Girl ruined our lives,? Blair said. ?He schemed and lied and spread horrible stories.??

Photos from AH: ?Gossip? Guy Chace Crawford?

Serena appeared at peace with the revelation, saying, ?What he did was ? write a love letter and not just to me, to all of us. It made me realize that I don?t want to run away, that you guys are my family. I belong here. And so does Dan.??

?I guess that means it?s all over now,? Blair added. ?That we can all grow up and move on.??

?Yeah,? Dan said. ?Gossip Girl?s dead.??

Dan?s version of Gossip Girl might be over, but is there a new blogger just waiting to dish the dirt??

As the viewers saw a crop of new high-school students, Kristen Bell?s voiceover returned, saying, ?You may be rid of Dan Humphrey, but you?ll never be rid of me. There?s always someone on the outside. ... Who am I now? That?s one secret I?ll never tell.??

Were you surprised that Dan was the blogger? What did you think of the finale overall? Tell us on our Facebook page!

AstraZeneca starts mid-stage TB drug trial in South Africa

LONDON (Reuters) - A new experimental drug that may fight drug-resistant strains of the lung disease tuberculosis is being tested in South Africa, where the first patient has been enrolled into a mid-stage clinical trial.

AstraZeneca, which developed the medicine known as AZD5847, is working with the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine on the Phase IIa clinical study.

Scientists have found an alarming number of cases of TB that are resistant to many of the most powerful existing antibiotic drugs, underlining the need for new treatments.

AstraZeneca's new drug is still several years from reaching the market. Even if it works in the trial, further tests will still be needed before it is approved for use.

The British drugmaker said on Tuesday it planned to test AZD5847 in further clinical trials as part of one or more next-generation combination therapies against TB.

Elephant-Poop Coffee Goes for $50 a Cup - Neatorama

If the infamous civet-poop coffee is too mainstream for your caffeine-intake needs, good news is here from the hills of Thailand, where a small herd of elephants are in full-time production of Black Ivory Coffee, the latest in weird gourmet food and drink. From Newser:

Trumpeted as earthy in flavor and smooth on the palate, the exotic new brew is made from beans eaten by Thai elephants and plucked a day later from their dung. A gut reaction inside the elephant creates what its founder calls the coffee's unique taste. Stomach turning or oddly alluring, Black Ivory Coffee is not just one of the world's most unusual specialty coffees: At $500 per pound, it's also among the world's priciest.

The intrepid souls who've tried Black Ivory say the coffee lacks the bitterness found in a cup of regular joe. Whether or not that's worth a trip to Thailand, the Maldives or Abu Dhabi ? where the coffee is available, but only in luxury and resort hotels ? is entirely up to you. For my part, I'm willing to put up with a little bitterness. Link?

12102012 ? How to avert a fiscal cliff and turn it into a Fiscal Slide?

When it comes to Fiscal Cliff?s and those sorts of hardships that will place the John Q public at risk, I say don?t do it :)

However, it may be something that is unavoidable. ?It will not be like jumping off a cliff ?with jagged rocks below with super frigid waters. ?I think it will be more of a fiscal slide.

real estate agents in the Santa Clarita valley citiesWe have watched as the housing recovery has started to proceed. ?With home prices in the Santa Clarita valley cities rising since September of 2011. ?How much, maybe your very next question ? somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 to 12 percent from the bottom of the real estate market. ?If we track back to the low point in the real estate market, you will see that the price per square foot has increased within these percentages. ?click here to see our interactive pricing page ? with sliding graphs to see what I?m talking about in a more factual nature. ?We have also placed PPSF ? Price per square foot intel at this location for the Santa Clarita Cities.

If you bought a home last year ? September 2011 or before, and if you paid 400K for that home ? you could be expected to pay $440K today. ?This is an average only and will adjust between specific parameters within the 8-12% spread. ?The home prices also are dependent on Quartile approach to real estate?Intel. ?Splitting the home price market in 25% chunks. ?With the top Quartile being the most expensive homes and the bottom quartile being the lease expensive 25% of homes.

With the dilemmas created by the Fiscal Cliff?s, we could see a slight?halt?to those increases. ?Let me emphasize ?slight?. ?There are still going to be people that want and need to buy real estate. ?It could be that most buyers think they have missed the real estate boat and that it has sailed without them. ?This is not the case when one looks at where interest rates were back in September 2011 and where they are today ? in December 2012 ? they are much lower with record numbers being set frequently (low numbers).

So, have you as a real estate buyer missed the bottom of the market? ?No you have not. ?Another thing that is being talked about, which I am in full agreement with, is the fact the ?investor community? is drying up. ?Leaving real estate resale to the ?owner occupied? crowd. ?This will be a breath of fresh air because they are mostly financed buyer prospects. ?Most of the investor community was Cash without the need or desire for?appraisals. ?No appraisal equated to higher home prices ? a temporary bubble. ?Leaving the purchase of any real estate out of an appraisers hands created these price increases we have seen as of late.

Although short lived, we have seen as a multitude of buyers have been ?beat up? and ?beaten out?. ?This is due to change in the coming months. ?The other issue we face, as we approach the end of the Holiday season, is the fact that real estate slows down. ?From all angles ? from the banks populating the properties onto the real estate market via their bank owned (REO ? real estate owned) inventory to the investor flips ? all have slowed down for now.

Q1 is good for real estate buyers ? and sellers know this. ?With the constrictive inventory ? we are looking forward to more ?fresh? inventory to hit the market during the first two weeks of January ? which is typical in a ?recovering? real estate market.

Please feel free to subscribe to our Santa Clarita real estate News that comes every two weeks, whether you need it or not. ?Be Safe and when you hear about someone wanting to do anything within the Santa Clarita real estate world ? please connect them to us and we will take great care of them! ?You have our word on that!

Syrian rebels take full control of army base

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels took full control of a sprawling military base on Tuesday after a two-day battle that left at least 35 government troops dead, an activist group said.

It was the second major base captured in the country's north by the rebels, who have been racking up victories in the area in recent weeks and making inroads further south toward Damascus, seat of the government they are fighting to overthrow.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the battle for the sprawling Sheik Suleiman military base, near the northern city of Aleppo, ended when the rebels took over the site's main compound and warehouses that housed a military research center. They had first breached the base perimeter on Sunday afternoon, after weeks of fighting with soldiers loyal to President Bashar Assad.

The Observatory relies on a network of activists inside Syria. It did not give figures on rebel casualties from the battle.

Also Tuesday in Aleppo ? the country's largest city and commercial center ? four mortar rounds hit the predominantly Kurdish neighborhood of Sheik Maksoud, killing 11 and wounding a dozen. The dead included three children and two women, the Observatory said.

The conflict started nearly 21 months ago as an uprising against Assad, whose family has ruled the country for four decades. It quickly morphed into a civil war, with rebels taking up arms to fight back against a bloody crackdown by the government. According to activists, more than 40,000 people have been killed since March 2011.

The Observatory said fighters from the jihadi groups, including Jabhat al-Nusra, Mujahedeen Shura Council and The Muhajireen, took part in the battle for the base.

Jabhat al-Nusra, which counts both Syrians and foreigners in its ranks, is one of the most effective fighting units on the rebel side. But the West is wary that such jihadi groups could hijack the uprising.

On Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton designated Jabhat al-Nusra a foreign terrorist organization. The move freezes any assets its members may have in U.S. jurisdictions and bars Americans from providing the group with material support. The designation is largely symbolic because the group is not thought to have holdings or support in the United States, but officials hope the penalties will encourage others to take similar action and discourage Syrians from joining.

That step was part of a package intended to help the leadership of the newly formed Syrian Opposition Council improve its standing and credibility as it pushes ahead with planning for a post-Assad future.

The Observatory also reported clashes and shelling in several Damascus suburbs, including Aqraba, near the international airport where fighting started early this month.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said five people were killed during clashes between troops and rebels in the Damascus suburb of Rankous.

The Observatory and the LCC said there were casualties in clashes in the northwestern Jisr al-Shughour area near the border with Turkey.

Stock market is a wild card in fiscal cliff talks

(AP) ? Congress and the White House can significantly soften the initial impact of the "fiscal cliff" even if they fail to reach a compromise by Dec. 31. One thing they cannot control, however, is the financial markets' reaction, which possibly could be a panicky sell-off that triggers economic reversals worldwide.

The stock market's unpredictability is perhaps the biggest wild card in the political showdown over the fiscal cliff.

President Barack Obama's re-election gives him a strong negotiating hand, as Republicans are increasingly acknowledging. And some Democrats are willing to let the Dec. 31 deadline pass, because a rash of broad-based tax hikes would pressure Republicans to give more ground in renewed deficit-reduction negotiations.

A chief fear for Obama's supporters, however, is that Wall Street would be so disgusted or dismayed that stocks would plummet before lawmakers could prove their newfound willingness to mitigate the fiscal cliff's harshest measures, including deep, across-the-board spending cuts that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says could significantly damage the nation's military posture. Some Republicans believe that fear will temper the president's insistence on a hard bargain this month. Obama and GOP House Speaker John Boehner on Sunday held their first meeting between just the two of them since the election, and spokesmen for both emphasized afterward their lines of communication remain open.

The so-called cliff's recipe of major tax hikes and spending cuts can actually be a gentle slope, because the policy changes would be phased in over time. Washington insiders say Congress and the White House would move quickly in January or February to undo many, but not all, of the tax hikes and spending cuts.

Financial markets, however, respond to emotion as well as to research, reason and promises. If New Year's headlines scream "Negotiations Collapse," an emotional sell-off could threaten the president's hopes for continued economic recovery in his second term, even if Republicans receive most of the blame for the impasse.

"Nobody can predict the markets' reaction," said Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn.

Some Republicans are surprised that the White House has not made clearer efforts to reassure Wall Street that if the Dec. 31 deadline is breached, the worrisome pile of tax increases and spending cuts would not hit all at once.

A few liberal commentators are making just that case.

"If we go past the so-called fiscal cliff deadlines and all the resulting budget cuts and tax increases come into force, the administration can minimize the damage," Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne wrote last week. "Obama can publicly announce he is delaying any cuts, on the theory that Congress will eventually vitiate some of them. And he can make sure the bond markets know of his plans well in advance. ... Everyone (especially Wall Street) should calm down."

Some financial bloggers agree. "Although it would be bad to let the spending cuts and tax hikes fully go into effect, if this thing is addressed in early January, things will be okay," wrote Business Insider's Joe Weisenthal.

So far, the stock markets have stayed calm. The S&P 500 index is up 12 percent for the year.

That might be because investors agree that a temporary trip over the cliff wouldn't be too harmful. Chastened lawmakers, the thinking goes, would quickly minimize the economic damage with a deficit-reduction compromise that eluded them in December.

Or, it's possible that investors view the most pessimistic tones surrounding the fiscal cliff talks as posturing that will give way to a last-minute deal. If that is the thinking ? and if the Dec. 31 deadline instead is breached ? Obama's fear might come to pass: The expectation of a deal might produce a significant decline in stock prices if it doesn't occur.

As bad as that sounds, some liberals think it will be necessary to force many Republicans to drop their opposition to higher tax rates on the wealthy that Obama says are crucial to trimming the deficit.

Rep. Peter Welch, a Vermont Democrat who says temporarily going over the cliff wouldn't be so bad, noted what happened on Sept. 29, 2008. The House surprised investors by rejecting a proposed bailout of the crisis-stricken financial sector. Republicans strongly opposed the plan despite then-President George W. Bush's support. The Dow plunged 777 points, its largest one-day point drop ever.

Four days later the House, shaken by the market reaction, passed a slightly modified bailout bill.

Welch said a similar market meltdown next month, in the event of a fiscal cliff impasse, "is what will force members of Congress eventually to act."

Few lawmakers in either party are eager to predict how the stocks and bonds markets would react to a failure to reach a fiscal cliff accord by year's end.

"Let's not pretend the markets fully understand the politicians, or the politicians fully understand the markets," said Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., who has served in Congress for 37 years.

NY-based group: 232 journalists jailed worldwide

(AP) ? The Committee to Protect Journalists said in a report Tuesday that a record-number 232 journalists are imprisoned worldwide and that Turkey has the highest number with 49 journalists behind bars.

The total is 53 more than the tally last year and is the highest number since the New York-based organization began conducting worldwide surveys in 1990.

The census of journalists behind bars on Dec. 1 found that anti-state charges such as terrorism, treason and subversion were the most common made against journalists in 2012. At least 132 journalists are being held around the world on such charges, CPJ said.

The group said that broadly worded anti-terror laws have allowed Turkish authorities to equate the coverage of banned groups with terrorism.

Mehmet Ali Birand, a top editor with the Istanbul-based station Kanal D, said the Turkish government "does not differentiate between these two major things: freedom of expression and terrorism."

The Turkish embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CPJ said the second-worst jailer of the press is Iran, with 45 behind bars. The group cited news reports that said Iranian blogger Sattar Beheshti was arrested in October and died after being beaten and hung by his limbs from the ceiling.

China was third with 32 journalists behind bars, 19 of them Tibetans or Uighurs imprisoned for documenting ethnic tensions, CPJ said.

"Journalists who report on areas deemed 'most sensitive' by the state ? China's troubled ethnic regions of Tibet and Xinjiang ? are most vulnerable," said Phelim Kine, deputy director of the Asia division of Human Rights Watch.

The overwhelming majority of the 232 detainees are local journalists being held by their own governments. Just three foreign journalists were on the list.

CPJ said the list does not include journalists imprisoned and released throughout the year, nor does it include journalists abducted by non-state entities such as criminal gangs or militant groups.

Vegetarian Christmas

Whatever is served at a traditional Christmas dinner, meat probably holds pride of place, and what good is that to us veggies? Here are some ideas to mix and match for a vegetarian Christmas menu.
?

Appetizers

Bell Pepper Soup
A delicious, colorful soup made with sweet peppers that can be served hot or cold.

Christmas Salad
This red, white, and green salad will help spread Christmas cheer.

Crudit?s
A platter of crudit?s typically consists one or more types of raw vegetables served with one or more dips. These can be served as an appetizer, at a buffet, in place of a salad ? the sky is the limit. Here are some ideas for interesting crudit? platters.

French Onion Soup
Traditional French onion soup is made with beef broth, but this vegetarian version is so flavorful that meat-eaters will never know the difference!

Garlic Soup
This garlic soup is as good as anything you?ve ever had in a restaurant ? it is wonderfully rich and velvety.

Minestrone Soup
This classic Italian soup is always vegan, as long as you leave off the parmesan cheese.

Roasted Chestnuts
Roasted chestnuts are such a traditional winter treat that there?s a song about them ? sing along as you roast your own chestnuts.
?

Bread

Buttermilk Biscuits
There?s nothing quite like buttermilk biscuits hot out of the oven.

Corn Bread
Hot corn bread is absolutely delicious topped with butter or cream cheese.

Dinner Rolls
I find that the nicest meals are always nicer with some bread in my hand, preferably warm from the oven. We don?t have a nice bakery nearby, so I have to make my own rolls, and this is the simplest recipe I?ve found.

Popovers
Recipe for popovers, perhaps the simplest and quickest way to enjoy fresh bread hot from the oven.
?

Vegetarian main courses

Cabbage Rolls
Normally filled with a mixture of ground beef and rice, cabbage rolls are a staple in Eastern Europe and a favorite in many other countries. Try these vegetarian cabbage rolls stuffed with vegetables for an equally tasty main course.

Eggplant Gratin
Eggplant layered with tomato sauce and topped with saffron custard makes an elegant and delicious main course.

Lasagna
Lasagna is basically a casserole made with layers of flat noodles, vegetables, cheese, and sometimes meat. There are a million variations on lasagna; here are some vegetarian favorites.

Moussaka
Moussaka is a Greek dish traditionally made with lamb or beef. This vegetarian / vegan moussaka recipe uses portobello mushrooms and seitan instead. A rich and delicious main course.

Pot Pie
This pot pie recipe is better than the TV dinner version for two reasons: it?s vegetarian and it?s prepared and baked, rather than frozen and microwaved. It?s also quick and flexible, so give it a try.

Ratatouille
The perfect recipe to enjoy fresh vegetables and herbs; it can be served half a dozen different ways.

Spanakopita
A classic vegetarian recipe from Greece: rich and delicious spinach-cheese pie.

Vegetable Gratin
This hearty dish is made with pasta and grilled vegetables and topped with melted cheese.

Veggie Loaf
This recipe for veggie burgers spread into a loaf pan and baked for 30-40 minutes makes a great vegetarian "meat" loaf.

Winter Squash Risotto
Risotto isn?t difficult to make, but it does require a lot of standing at the stove, stirring away. The end result, however, is delicious and a wonderful comfort food.
?

Side dishes

Gravy
This simple, nut-based gravy recipe will satisfy your cravings at Christmas or any other time of year.

Mashed Potatoes
Mashed potatoes are the ultimate comfort food. They?re quick and easy and the soft texture makes me feel like a kid. They?re also a great base for all kinds of variations like vegan mashed potatoes and garlic mashed potatoes.

Proven?al Tomatoes
These stuffed tomatoes from southern France are delicious served with soup, pasta, or rice dishes.

Stuffed Sweet Potatoes
Make the most of the sweet potatoes available in winter ? these stuffed sweet potatoes are sweet and buttery.

Stuffing
Stuffing doesn?t have to be cooked inside a turkey ? this vegetarian bread stuffing with apples and walnuts is delicious baked as a casserole.
?

Dessert

Apple Pie
For me, autumn and early winter = apples, and I can?t think of a better way to enjoy them than in a homemade apple pie.

Ginger-Brandy Cheesecake
Sweet, rich cheesecake with a ginger snap crust and orange glaze.

Gingerbread
Moist and spicy, gingerbread is a perfect Christmas treat.

Mincemeat
Make a big batch of vegetarian mincemeat so that you can make a few pies and have some left over to serve with ice cream, custard, pudding, or cr?pes. You can also can or freeze it for later.

Plum Pudding
Plum pudding is a traditional Christmas dessert in the UK, and is normally made with suet. Julia Child?s version shows that there?s no reason plum pudding can?t be vegetarian.
?

Drinks

Egg Nog
Egg nog is a traditional winter drink, which I find rather odd since it?s cold and I always want something warm. If you?re worried about salmonella from raw eggs, use pasteurized eggs.

Mulled Wine
Warm, spicy mulled wine is a wonderful winter drink.
?

Tips

Adaptable Recipes
Meals with a mixed group of vegetarians and non-vegetarians can require a lot of extra effort from the cook. However, you can save a lot of work by making similar dishes for both groups ? a vegetarian version and a meat version. Here are some vegetarian recipes that lend themselves easily to meat additions.

Dealing with Vegetarians
If you?re not a vegetarian, the thought of cooking for or eating with someone who is may seem rather daunting. In fact, it?s really not that difficult, if you follow a few simple guidelines and use common sense.

Obama, Boehner meet to discuss 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner met Sunday at the White House to discuss the ongoing negotiations over the impending "fiscal cliff," the first meeting between just the two leaders since Election Day.

Spokesmen for both Obama and Boehner said they agreed to not release details of the conversation, but emphasized that the lines of communication remain open.

The meeting comes as the White House and Congress try to break an impasse over finding a way to stop a combination of automatic tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to kick in at the beginning of next year.

Obama met in November with Boehner, as well as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The president spoke by telephone with Reid and in person with Pelosi on Friday. The president is traveling to Redford, Mich., on Monday to promote his agenda in a speech to workers at an engine factory.

Obama has been pushing higher tax rates on the wealthiest Americans as one way to reduce the deficit ? a position Boehner and other House Republicans have been steadfastly against. Republicans are demanding steeper cuts in costly government entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security.

One GOP senator said Sunday that Senate Republicans would probably agree to higher tax rates on the wealthiest Americans if it meant getting a chance to overhaul entitlement programs.

The comments by Bob Corker of Tennessee ? a fiscal conservative who has been gaining stature in the Senate as a pragmatic deal broker ? puts new pressure on Boehner and other Republican leaders to rethink their long-held assertion that even the very rich shouldn't see their rates go up next year. GOP leaders have argued that the revenue gained by hiking the top two tax rates would be trivial to the deficit, and that any tax hike hurts job creation.

But Corker said insisting on that red line ? especially since Obama won re-election after campaigning on raising tax rates on the wealthy ? might not be wise.

"There is a growing group of folks looking at this and realizing that we don't have a lot of cards as it relates to the tax issue before year end," Corker told "Fox News Sunday."

If Republicans agree to Obama's plan to increase rates on the top 2 percent of Americans, Corker added, "the focus then shifts to entitlements and maybe it puts us in a place where we actually can do something that really saves the nation."

Besides getting tax hikes through the Republican-dominated House, Corker's proposal faces another hurdle: Democrats haven't been receptive to GOP proposals on the entitlement programs. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., on Sunday was skeptical about proposals to increase the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 67. He said he doesn't see Congress addressing the complicated issue of Medicare overhaul in the three weeks remaining before the end of the year.

"I just don't think we can do it in a matter of days here before the end of the year," Durbin said. "We need to address that in a thoughtful way through the committee structure after the first of the year."

And hard-line fiscal conservatives in the House are holding fast to their position.

"No Republican wants to vote for a rate tax increase," said Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, chairman of the House Republican Conference.

Added Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.: "I'm not sure there is support for the rate hikes. There is support for revenue by cleaning up the code."

Still, at least one House Republican has said there is another way. Rep. Tom Cole, of Oklahoma, has said Obama and Boehner should agree not to raise tax rates on the majority of Americans and negotiate the rates for top earners later. Cole said Sunday that most House Republicans would vote for that approach because it doesn't include a rate hike.

"You know, it's not waving a white flag to recognize political reality," Cole said.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., already has said he could support higher tax rates on upper incomes as part of a comprehensive plan to cut the federal deficit.

When asked Sunday what it would take to sign on to a tax rate increase, Coburn echoed Corker's comments by responding, "Significant entitlement reform." He quickly added, however, that he has estimated that such a tax rate increase would only affect about 7 percent of the deficit.

"Will I accept a tax increase as a part of a deal to actually solve our problems? Yes," Coburn said. "But the president's negotiating with the wrong people. He needs to be negotiating with our bondholders in China, because if we don't put a credible plan on the discussion, ultimately, we all lose."

Obama's plan would raise $1.6 trillion in revenue over 10 years, partly by letting decade-old tax cuts on the country's highest earners expire at the end of the year. He would continue those Bush-era tax cuts for everyone except individuals earning more than $200,000 and couples making above $250,000. The highest rates on top-paid Americans would rise from 33 percent and 35 percent to 36 percent and 39.6 percent.

Boehner has offered $800 billion in new revenues to be raised by reducing or eliminating unspecified tax breaks on upper-income people. The Republican plan would cut spending by $1.4 trillion, including by trimming annual increases in Social Security payments and raising the eligibility age for Medicare.

Hensarling and Coburn spoke on ABC's "This Week." Blackburn and Cole spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Durbin spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Father Frost gets cold shoulder in Uzbekistan

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) ? Taking a leaf out of a Dr. Seuss story, the Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan is reportedly stealing Christmas by keeping the local version of Santa Claus off the airwaves.

Independent news website UzMetronom reported Monday that President Islam Karimov's authoritarian government imposed the informal ban on Father Frost and his snow maiden sidekick.

The characters have for decades been regular fixtures across the former Soviet world over the New Year's holiday season.

The ban is similar to the semiofficial 2005 ban on celebrating New Year's Eve.

Uzbekistan has proven hostile to other holidays deemed insufficiently native. In February, authorities canceled concerts for Valentine's Day and instead organized readings of poems by medieval Mughal emperor Babur.

Karimov has been eager to eliminate Soviet culture in Uzbekistan.

What is the best way to save money when my ... - Roth IRA News

I was wondering what would be the best way to save money that cannot be easily accessable(tempting to spend)? I needed to know, because I was curious into looking into CDs and such?but I do not know much about what they are or what they do. A simple savings account would not be a good idea because we can get money out of it easily. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Austrian bus driver finds, turns in about $500,000

(AP) ? Vienna's transport authority says a city bus driver checking a bag left behind by a passenger had the surprise of his life ? ?390,000 (more than $500,000) in neatly stacked 500-euro bills.

Transit authority spokeswoman Anna-Maria Reich says the driver handed the stash to police who tracked down the owner, an unidentified elderly woman.

But the driver has nothing to show for his honesty beyond praise from superiors. Weeks later, the owner has not contacted him to offer a reward.

The incident happened last month and Reich confirmed details first reported Thursday by several Austrian tabloids. It was unclear why the woman was carrying so much cash.

Steven Finn believes England stuck to the plan on day-four ? Cricket News Update

England pacer, Steven Finn, has said that England stuck to the plan while bowling against India that helped them secure a position from where losing the match would require an insipid performance on the final day of the third Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Finn, who took three for 37 on Saturday, while giving an interview after the end of the day?s play said, "It was hard for us to get that first wicket but we stuck to our guns and we stuck to the plans we have worked towards in the series and that paid off. At lunch we said that we needed to up it a bit. We needed to focus on how we wanted to get the batsmen out."

?If we win tomorrow we will only be 2-1 up in the series, and going into the fourth Test it's important that we have no complacency, and keep working, keep looking to get better. The great point about this England side is that we are always looking to get better," he added.

He, however, admitted that breaking the first partnership between Gautam Gambhir and V Sehwag was hard and after that it was an easy journey for the tourists.

Praising spinner Graeme Swann, who drew first blood on Saturday, Finn said, ?That ball from Swanney was an excellent one. That sort of kick-started us into the session.?

He added that England worked well as a team on Saturday that helped them deny a team like India to score big or even stay on the wicket long enough to take the game towards a draw.

India, who have secured a lead by only 32 runs are nine wickets down and it would require something out of this world to stop England from taking the final wicket, which would probably give the English a reachable total to chase after.

The way India bowled in their first innings means they lack the firepower to bowl-out England while defending a small target.

England players would sleep well tonight as they can already smell a win tomorrow. This win will give them a lead by 2-1 in the four-match Tests series.

Australian radio chair: Station reviewing policy

LONDON (AP) ? The reverberations from the death of a nurse who accepted a hoax phone call about the ill Duchess of Cambridge spread through two countries Sunday, as Australian authorities said London police had contacted them about a possible investigation.

The Australian radio station behind the call also announced an immediate review of its broadcast practices after the debacle, which began with a prank call made Tuesday to the hospital where the former Kate Middleton was being treated for acute morning sickness.

Two radio DJs managed to impersonate Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles and received confidential information about the Duchess's medical condition, which was broadcast on-air. The controversial prank took a dark twist three days later with the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha, a 46-year-old mother of two, who was duped by the DJs despite their Australian accents.

The death has sparked an angry backlash against the DJs, who have been taken off the air indefinitely.

After an emergency meeting Sunday, Max Moore-Wilton, the chairman of parent company Southern Cross Austereo, which owns the 2DayFM radio station, said in a letter to the hospital's chairman that the company will cooperate with any investigation.

"It is too early to know the full details leading to this tragic event and we are anxious to review the results of any investigation that may be made available to us or made public," he wrote. "I can assure you we are taking immediate action and reviewing the broadcast and processes involved."

"As we have said in our own statements on the matter, the outcome was unforeseeable and very regrettable," he wrote.

Australian police Sunday confirmed they had been contacted by London police and said they would cooperate.

Police have not yet determined Saldanha's cause of death, but people from London to Sydney have been making the assumption she died because of stress from the call.

Both DJs involved apologized for the prank before Saldanha's death. Their Twitter accounts have been taken down after they were bombarded by thousands of abusive comments.

A spokeswoman said Sunday the two DJs want to speak out about Saldanha's death.

The station has a history of controversy, including airing a segment in which a 14-year-old girl revealed that she had been raped. It also ran a series of "Heartless Hotline" shows in which disadvantaged people were offered a prize that could be taken away from them by listeners.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority, which regulates radio broadcasting, says it received complaints from around the world and is considering whether it should launch an investigation

Separately, Prince William on Sunday pulled out of attending the British Military Tournament, billed as "the largest display of military theatre in the world", citing Kate's illness.

The Duchess has been resting and has not been seen in public since leaving the hospital.

Officials from St. James's Palace have said the duchess is not yet 12 weeks pregnant. The child would be the first for her and William and would be third in line to the British throne.

Big knockout may set up Pacquiao-Marquez again

(AP) ? The idea of Manny Pacquiao being knocked out cold was shocking enough. The sight of him face down on the canvas, unresponsive even as bedlam broke out all around him, was positively frightening.

Mitt Romney saw it up close from his ringside seat just a few feet away. So did Pacquiao's wife, who broke down in tears and tried to get in the ring to aid her downed husband.

Juan Manuel Marquez didn't even bother to look. He was already busy celebrating the knockout of a lifetime.

This was boxing at its brutal best, a toe-to-toe slugfest Saturday night that was destined from the opening bell to be decided by fists instead of judges. Both fighters had been down, and both fighters were hurting when Marquez threw a right hand off the ropes with a second left in the sixth round that could be felt all the way in the rafters of the MGM Grand arena.

It will go down among the great fights of their era. But it was barely over when the cry arose for the two ever-so-willing warriors to do it again.

When it comes to Pacquiao and Marquez, four fights may not be enough.

"If you give us a chance, we'll fight again," Pacquiao said. "I was just starting to feel confident and then I got careless."

Indeed, the case could be made that Pacquiao was on the verge of a big win himself when Marquez landed the punch that sent him falling face first on the canvas. He had come back from a third round knockdown to drop Marquez in the fifth and was landing big left hands that broke and bloodied the Mexican's nose.

After three fights that all went the distance both fighters had vowed to be more aggressive in their fourth meeting. Pacquiao ended up paying the price for it when he tried to close the sixth round with a flurry, a big mistake against a counterpuncher who drew him into his sights.

"I knew Manny could knock me out at any time," Marquez said. "I threw the perfect punch."

Pacquiao, who hadn't been stopped in a fight since 1999 in Thailand when he was a 112-pounder, took several minutes to come around on the canvas before being led to his ring stool. He blew his nose and stared vacantly ahead as the pro-Marquez crowd of 16,348 screamed in excitement.

He was taken to the hospital for a precautionary brain scan, then went to his hotel suite, where he ate with wife Jinkee and his entourage and watched a replay of the fight to see what went wrong.

"Spoiler alert," Pacquiao said as the fight played on the TV. "I don't think you are going to like how this ends."

His countrymen in the Philippines certainly didn't. The country came to a standstill as it usually does when its hero fights, and for the second fight in a row they were bitterly disappointed.

In the southern region where the boxer and congressman lives, some survivors of a powerful typhoon that killed more than 600 people this week watched on a big TV screen in a gym that serves as an emergency shelter in the town of New Bataan.

"People were really dismayed," town spokesman Marlon Esperanza said. "It was like they were hit by another typhoon."

What Marquez hit Pacquiao with might have seemed almost as powerful. Pacquiao had dropped Marquez four times in their first three fights, but Marquez had never put him down before he landed a big right hand in the third round for his first knockdown. The power was sure to raise questions about the new bulked-up physique Marquez has at the age of 39, which he said came from hard work under a strength conditioner who once provided steroids to Marion Jones and other track stars.

Still, it was a career-defining moment for Marquez, who believes he was robbed by the judges in his first three fights with Pacquiao. The two fought to a draw eight years ago at 125 pounds and Pacquiao was awarded close decisions in the other two fights.

It was clear there would be no need for the judges on this night, which might have been good for Marquez since he was losing by one point on all three scorecards when he landed his big punch.

The only question was which fighter would end the night on the canvas.

It turned out to be Pacquiao, who lost a controversial decision in his last fight to Timothy Bradley and who many in boxing believe is showing the wear of 17 years in the ring. For any other fighter the knockout loss might be the end, but Pacquiao showed no sign afterward that he was willing to call it quits on his remarkable career and return to his other job as a congressman in the Philippines.

Trainer Freddie Roach said the decision won't be an easy one.

"I said if he is back in the gym and I see signs of him declining I'll tell him to retire, but if I don't see that I won't tell him to retire," Roach said. "I'd love to get a rematch, but is that the best move right away? Should we try him out in a softer fight first? There is a lot of things we have to think about. It's very complicated, and it's not going to be overnight."

One thing the stunning loss did do was scuttle, perhaps forever, what would have been the richest fight in boxing history. With Pacquiao now damaged goods, any fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. would be fought for a lot less money and generate a lot less interest than if it had happened with Pacquiao still on his winning streak and still in his prime.

Pacquiao's career may not be over. If postfight comments from both fighters and promoter Bob Arum were any indication, he and Marquez will more than likely fight for a fifth time. There's too much money to be had and the fighter in Pacquiao will surely want a chance at redemption.

That will be a hot topic of discussion in the months ahead. For now, though, one thing is for sure.

On this night, one huge right hand from Marquez changed everything.
