Texas farmers use business wile to weather drought

ELKHART, Texas (AP) ? Linda Galayda hauled water and flagged down truck drivers to ask about their hay. She sold calves and young cows and made her son leave their East Texas family ranch for a job in San Antonio.

About 200 miles southeast of her, Bob and Darlene Stryk heeded lessons from a dry spell 16 years ago and kept their 130-year-old farm afloat by selling higher-priced, specialty products like raw milk and cheddar cheese before the drought forced them to make their most difficult decision yet.

The drought that parched the vast Texas landscape, sucking dry ponds, lakes and reservoirs and severely damaging soil and grasslands, traumatized farmers and ranchers, who ? like their ancestors who survived the Dust Bowl and the dry spell of the 1950s ? will tell tales about the drought for generations.

The drought of 2011 cost $7.6 billion in crop losses, the most ever recorded, and forced ranchers to slaughter millions of animals, cutting Texas' cattle herd to its smallest size since 1952.

Now, as they try to recover and plan for the future, Galayda and Stryk share their stories, offering a peek at life during the worst one-year drought in Texas history.

___

For months, Galayda lived in constant fear for her "girls," the herd of cows that hark back to her late father. There was no grass or hay. Two springs that flowed even during a decade-long dry spell in the 1950s ? which serves as Texas' drought barometer ? dried up. Wildfires raged just two miles from the rolling hills of the 7-7 Ranch in Elkhart.

Even now, after the fires are out, Galayda's hand clenches when she talks about the helplessness and all-consuming fear of knowing an uncontrollable blaze could rip across the 2,500 acres she ranches, destroying generations of work.

"We've all heard stories about droughts of years past, but this one was," Galayda pauses, searching for the perfect word.

"Awful."

It took every ounce of business acumen ? much of it acquired during the 25 years she pounded the New York pavement in stillettos as a vice president at today's Macys ? to make it through last winter with a herd.

This time, instead of designer heels, Galayda wore Wranglers and cowboy boots when executing her carefully conceived business plan. First, before the spring of 2011, she looked over the livestock. Cows that weren't pregnant, heifers ? or young females ? with the smallest deficiency and other any less-than-perfect bovine was sold.

In the spring, excessive wind sucked the last moisture from the soil. The rain stopped. Grass disappeared. And there was no hay in Texas.

"I actually flagged down trucks that were carrying quality hay ... and asked them 'Where's this hay coming from?'" Galayda said with a laugh, recalling how she stopped drivers bringing hay to her neighbors to see if she couldn't get some as well.

Trucks rolled in, sometimes in the dead of night. Galayda's husband, Gary, unloaded bales at 4 a.m. The entire family ? sons Christopher and Scott Crawford, and his wife, Rebekah, pitched in. The ranch spent all the cash reserves, about $140,000, to buy hay. Scott dipped into his savings. Christopher got a job in San Antonio.

The family got rid of more animals, losing money as calves were sold early and at lower-than-normal weight. Heifers normally used to restock were also sold.

By August, the heat was so intense, with weeks of 100-degree days with no rain, that Galayda and two cowboys began work at 4:30 a.m., relying on their horses to get them through the pitch black safely. They moved cows to smaller pastures, trying to decrease the distance the animals had to walk to hauled-in water. By 10:30 a.m., it was too hot to work.

"The cows were grazing at night ... if they grazed at all," Galayda said.

Finally, in January, it rained. The creeks, ponds and lake refilled. The cows gave birth. The grass grew green.

Things were different, though. Some calves came later. A few got sick. The vet blamed anything odd on the drought.

"Everything was just not as it normally is," Galayda said. "You can help her (a cow) so much, but nothing, nothing takes the place of green grass."

This spring, the rain has slowed. Galayda's herd is smaller ? down to about 370 head from a pre-drought high of 500 ? but she is cautious, not yet ready to restock. The land, she believes, needs to heal. She does, too.

"I don't think anybody's back in a position yet to say this is over with."

On the Stryk Jersey Farm, in Engle, Texas, the situation also was tense.

By fall, the hay barn was empty ? a first in Darlene and Bob Stryk's 26-year marriage. And the pond was mud, also a first since the Stryk family purchased the farm in 1882.

Every three or four days, they filled a 1,500-gallon water tank for the heifers. Each time, they prayed the well wouldn't dry up too.

They already knew drought.

It nearly ran them out of business in 1996. Then, hay was expensive, and milk was cheap. Darlene Stryk took a "town" job, wandering around the state with a cow in a truck, teaching children about dairy operations. Bob Stryk worked as a mechanic. Their debt was enormous. Something had to change, or all would be lost.

They cut their herd from 140 dairy cows to 25 and launched Strykly Texas Cheese, covering blocks of cheddar shaped like Texas, jalapenos and cowboy boots with wax by hand to fill gift baskets. As the business grew, they gradually built their herd back up to 60 head.

A neighbor's bull jumped the fence, and a small beef herd was born.

Each year, though, milk sales failed to cover the animals' feed costs, and they had to transfer money from the burgeoning cheese business to make up the difference. So, in 2006, they got a state license to sell raw, or unpasteurized, non-homogenized milk, to a niche market of people often interested in organic products and buying directly from farms.

Despite the health risks associated with drinking unpasteurized milk, which can contain harmful bacteria, the Stryks were confident in their business plan. They drink their own milk and undergo rigorous state inspections to keep their license.

Within three years, the Stryks, able to earn about double by selling directly to consumers rather than wholesalers, stopped selling to large dairies. They started making their own cheese. They sold grass-fed beef.

Then, in 2010, the rain stopped again. Grass dried up, and hay prices skyrocket. It was time, again, to decide.

"We had to sell all our beef cattle because it was either feed the Jerseys, who were able to produce milk daily and give us financial security, versus a beef herd, which you only sell a calf once a year," Darlene Stryk explained.

A week later, it rained.

"And basically, it's been raining ever since," Darlene Stryk said with a touch of irony. "We rolled the dice, and Mother Nature won once again."

Now, the pastures are green. The creeks are full, but the land is still fragile. Cattle prices are rising, and they too aren't yet willing to invest in a beef herd that will cost more than the one they sold.

They are thankful for the steady sales of raw milk and cheese that saved them. It was, they believe, customer loyalty, the intimacy created when people buy their product directly from the farm, that kept them afloat this time.

"We would not be in the dairy business if it had not been for the retail raw milk permit," Stryk explained.

And so, they wait, and heal along with the land.

Adorn Home Improvements - How to repair a door or window screen

Now that summer is in full swing you have surely begun to notice and battle, the annual invasion of mosquitoes and flies. For those of you who do not have air conditioning or if you simply enjoy the cool evening breezes this is also the time of year to dig out your door and window screens. Before you install your screens they should be checked for holes and tears that would allow these six legged pests into your home.

Fortunately, you can repair holes and tears up to about 3 inches in diameter and when done properly, the patch will be barely visible. Holes that are larger than 3 inches generally call for replacing the screen fabric or the screen itself. The method of repair will also depend on if the screen fabric is fiberglass or metal.

If your screen is fiberglass you can patch a hole by placing the edges together and daubing them with some clear nail polish. The nail polish acts as an adhesive and holds the edges together while repelling any external weather conditions.

If your screen is metal or if part of the screen is missing it will be necessary to purchase a pre-made self-adhesive patch kit. To attach a metal screen patch, unravel the edges of the patch and bend the end wires at a 90 degree angle. Carefully then push the bent ends through the screen weave covering the hole and bend the end wires back to their starting position. To complete the repair, trim off any excess lengths of wire cutters.

For helpful advice and expert repairs bring your screens to repair specialists Adorn Home Improvements. To learn more about their professional screen repair services give them a call at 905-665-9565 or visit their website, http://www.adornhomeimprovements.com/.

Obama blames Romney for spreading 'cow pie of distortion.' Is he right?

Mitt Romney had criticized the Obama administration's accumulation of US debt. Big numbers such as America?s debt may seem solid, but they?re not.

President Obama during an Iowa campaign appearance on Thursday went after Mitt Romney with a vengeance. Among other things, Mr. Obama said that a recent Romney speech criticizing the administration?s accumulation of US debt was a ?cow pie of distortion.?

?I don?t know whose record he twisted the most ? mine or his,? said Obama to laughter from the crowd at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

Um, OK. That?s a pretty pungent metaphor for those of us who aren?t hearing it in the context of a Midwestern livestock arena. Is the president right?

We?ll note first of all that big numbers such as America?s annual deficit and the accumulated debt seem solid, but they?re not. They?re prone to manipulation in analysis, depending on which numbers you choose, what your start and end dates are, and so forth.

In particular, Obama was responding to a Romney charge that a ?prairie fire of debt? is sweeping the United States. (Do speechwriters get together in a bipartisan manner to dream up unfortunate metaphors? Dried cow patties could fuel a prairie fire, though. Just saying.)

In Iowa Thursday, Obama said that it?s true the recession has added to the debt. More people need unemployment insurance. Tax receipts are lower.

Obama kind of glided past the unpopular phrase ?stimulus spending,? however, saying only that his administration?s efforts had helped keep the US auto industry alive and more teachers on the job.

?But what my opponents didn?t tell you was that federal spending since I took office has risen at the slowest pace of any president in almost 60 years,? said Obama.

This assertion has become an article of faith among Democrats in recent days. It stems from an analysis by Rex Nutting of MarketWatch in The Wall Street Journal that found federal spending under Obama has risen at an annualized rate of only 1.4 percent.

That?s the slowest pace since President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

?Of all the falsehoods told about President Barack Obama, the biggest whopper is the one about his reckless spending spree,? Mr. Nutting writes.

However, a new Washington Post analysis of that same ground on Friday finds methodological problems with Nutting?s analysis. (See our warning about the fluidity of apparently solid numbers, above.)

We won?t go into depth here, beyond noting that according to the Post, Nutting shaves off much of Obama?s first year in office, attributing that to locked-in budgets put in place by President Bush. He also assumes that drastic automatic cuts now looming because of a congressional budget clash will, in fact, happen.

Under Obama, federal spending as a percentage of the US gross domestic product has risen from 20.8 percent to 23.3 percent. Washington Post fact checker Glenn Kessler gives the ?slowest since Ike? assertion, which was repeated Thursday by White House spokesman Jay Carney, a rating of Three Pinocchios. That means Mr. Kessler finds it mostly wrong.

?The White House might have a case that some of the rhetoric concerning Obama?s spending patterns has been overblown, but ... the picture is not as rosy as [Mr. Carney] portrayed it when accurate numbers, taken in context, are used,? writes Kessler.

Think this is the final word on the subject? We doubt it. We suggest reading the analyses listed above, and the inevitable responses and counterresponses, for yourselves.

Philip Blumberg Blog: University Medical Center of Princeton at ...

The University Medical Center of Princeton opened its new medical center this week, the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro (UMCPP), completing a $447 million project. Princeton HealthCare System announced on Tuesday that 110 patients from the University Medical Center at Princeton had bee safely transferred to the new hospital via ambulance. In an open letter from Barry S. Rabner, President and CEO of Princeton HealthCare System, had this to say of the new medical center:

"During the past nine years, countless questions have been asked by thousands of people and the one question I continue to think about is 'Why did our community make this extraordinary investment?'

"The answer is critical because it tells us what is expected of us. I thought we answered the question when it was asked by the department of health, township councils, planning boards, neighbors, medical staff, employees, donors, reporters, bankers and advocacy groups representing everyone from seniors to children and the uninsured.

"Our answer always included the need to:

? Address increased demand for care from a growing and aging population
? Accommodate changes in technology
? Introduce new clinical programs and services
? Improve clinical outcomes
? Improve patient and family satisfaction with their care
? Reduce costs."

UMCPP, consisting of approximately 630,000 square feet of interior space on 50 acres, is the cornerstone of a 171-acre healthcare campus in the community of Plainsboro Township, N.J. The health campus includes a new hospital, attached medical office building, education center, skilled nursing facility, and other uses enhancing the health well-being of Central Jersey residents, such as the possibility of a pediatric services center, health and fitness center, long-term care facility, and assisted living facility. UMCPP was designed by team of world-leading architects and consultants including Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum (HOK) and RMJM Hillier.

Huawei Ascend P1 slips through FCC with pentaband goodness for all

Image

Huawei's putting a whole bunch of oomph behind its 2012 lineup, and it's finally beginning to get noticed here in the US. Not too long after getting the Ascend D1 approved by the FCC, the Chinese manufacturer has returned to Washington to push the Ascend P1 through the government agency. Regarded as a close sibling to the slimmer P1 S, this particular Platinum-class device comes offering gifts of pentaband HSPA+ / UMTS, which means there's a chance we could see it show up on AT&T or T-Mobile (neither carrier has made their intentions known as of yet). The OMAP 4460-powered Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone will, however, be available in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia by the end of the month, with Europe and Latin America following soon after. If you enjoy poring through federal documents, you'll love peeking at the source link below.

JudyCare: Focusing on Fighting Cancer, Without Fear of Lifetime ...

Dori Salcido
May 22, 2012
01:45 PM EDT

Ed. note: This is cross-posted from HealthCare.gov

Judy Lamb from Colorado is an inspiration. Despite fighting breast cancer that has spread to her bones and liver and undergoing weekly chemotherapy, she has a positive outlook on life.

?I have three children, I?m married, and I cook dinner every night. It?s not really exciting, but it?s a wonderful life. I?m so glad I?m here, because without my treatments I wouldn?t be here,? she says.

She is able to maintain her positive attitude partly because the Affordable Care Act has removed a tremendous burden: the fear that her health plan would stop paying for her treatments.

?Without the Affordable Care Act, I would be so worried about lifetime limits and pre-existing conditions that I wouldn?t be able to sleep,? she says. ?It?s bad enough that you have cancer, but then you have to worry about the insurance companies cutting you off. I would die if I didn?t have insurance.?

In the past, Judy?s insurance company had a lifetime limit of $2 million dollars. With her care costing anywhere from $250,000 to $500,000 a year, Judy had felt like the clock was ticking on her treatments. She knew that if she hit the lifetime limit, not only would she struggle to continue to pay for her treatments, but she might have trouble finding other health care coverage because of her pre-existing condition.

But the health care law ended lifetime dollar caps on coverage, which means she can focus on staying well and living her life. And starting in 2014, insurance companies will no longer be able to discriminate against people who have pre-existing conditions, meaning that people like Judy would have more options for coverage.

"You can live your life and have cancer and you can live your life without worry because of the Affordable Care Act,? Judy says.

If you have a story like Judy?s, share it at HealthCare.gov/MyCare.

Sources: US envoy to Afghanistan to step down

Veteran U.S. diplomat Ryan Crocker is expected to step down soon from his post as President Barack Obama's envoy to Afghanistan, departing the U.S. mission in Kabul as the United States negotiates a host of challenges on its course out of the long, costly war.

The Obama administration is considering Deputy Ambassador James Cunningham to replace Crocker when he leaves the post as early as this month, sources familiar with the matter said.

It was not immediately clear why the widely respected diplomat was leaving.

Crocker, who came out of retirement to become ambassador in Kabul in July 2011, has led diplomatic efforts in Afghanistan at a time when the White House has focused on reducing the U.S. presence there ? and on doing so without letting the country slide back into civil war.

Crocker was one of the high-level officials discussing Afghanistan's future at a NATO summit that concluded on Monday in Obama's home town of Chicago.

There, Western leaders refined their plans to pull most of their troops out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and put local forces in charge.

At the core of Crocker's job has been maintaining a difficult, and at times openly hostile, U.S. relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and overseeing civilian efforts to combat corruption and poverty in Afghanistan.

Video: NATO focuses on Afghanistan (on this page)

Crocker has anchored the U.S. diplomatic presence at a time when Western sites ? and even the American embassy building itself ? have been the target by Taliban militants.

NATO summit prompts little buzz on streets of Kabul

Crocker has also urged the Afghan government to make reforms that could help it secure billions of dollars in future outside aid.

The appointment of a diplomat of Crocker's stature in 2011 was seen as another sign of Obama's desire to turn around a campaign that was receiving insufficient attention and resources for years ? and of his determination to steer the U.S. mission there toward a conclusion.

Obama, Karzai push post-2014 vision of Afghanistan

News of Crocker's departure comes only weeks after Cameron Munter, the U.S. ambassador in Islamabad, informed his staff he would be leaving his post in coming months.

In yet another diplomatic departure as Obama's current term enters its final stretch, Reuters reported that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's top diplomat for the Middle East, Jeffrey Feltman, will soon leave for a top post at the United Nations.

Tough Iraq posting
Crocker earned respect in his earlier role as U.S. ambassador to Iraq from 2007-2009, when a surge in U.S. forces was credited with helping to calm a country convulsed by sectarian violence.

The post in Baghdad ? when suicide bombings and mortar attacks were a daily occurrence ? appeared to tax Crocker's health. He has also served as ambassador to Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait and Lebanon.

Report: Taliban, Afghan troops forge agreements

As a young diplomat, he worked at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut when it was bombed in 1982 and when an American Marine barracks was attacked the following year.

Crocker retired from the government in April 2009, becoming dean of the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University.

Cunningham, who would need to be nominated and confirmed by the Senate if he were to become the permanent U.S. envoy, was ambassador to Israel before he came to Kabul last year.

Just Blowing Smoke...: The "Stuck on Stupid" Dictionary #33

Apparently the staff disciplinarian here at Just Blowing Smoke has achieve a modicum of succes through the occasional beatings of the lazy lexicographers of the "Stuck on Stupid" dictionary.? And though?it would be difficult to say that morale has improved, these 'enthusiasm enhancing episodes' appear to do have had at least some impact on?the quantity, if not?the quality of their efforts.? (Personally, I just think they're jealous of the Cheetos that we supply to the DJBSS in their attic Command Center.)? Senior staff will continue to search for new ways to 'inspire' greater output.

Now for those of you who have somehow managed to miss previous postings in this area (shame on you, now go back and read all of the postings under the label of dictionary), the SOS dictionary is a reference guide to terms which nominally mean something to the rest of the English speaking world, but appear to mean something entirely different when looked at in a political context, especially to those us who have come to understand the often peculiar vernacular of politics in Toledo, Northwest Ohio ... and sometimes even the nation as a whole.

3. A sum of money which is usually considered too high when paid to an institution of higher learning for?a college education annually on a per student basis; in spite of the fact that it's nearly?identical to the sum paid for the K-12 education.? (The difference in how this number is perceived may be due to the fact that it has lost its 'veil of invisibility', is not spread over property tax payers whether they have children in school or not, and must therefore be paid for either by the parents or the students themselves? ... even if they have to borrow the money to do so.)

The VoIP and the Need for QoS

The telephone is one of the most useful inventions man has ever made. It is something that made the world smaller and it is also something that modern society is continuing to use in businesses and also in homes. Since the telephone was invented, services have since improved and additional phone features are also available, such as three-way calling, or call waiting.

The telephone line is now also being used to connect to the internet. High speed internet connection through DSL is now available in most telephone companies. Today, the telecommunications industry is now taking it one step forward and developed a new kind of telephone system that is starting to gain popularity in today?s society. Imagine, with this kind of communication system, you will be able to talk to your loved ones abroad for a fraction of the cost that you will usually get in conventional landline phones. Also, features, such as call waiting, call forwarding, return call, video conferencing capabilities, caller ID and others are integrated with this particular communication system as a standard package, which means that it?s entirely free.

Free calls are also integrated with this new kind of phone system. If you are calling someone from halfway around the world, who is also subscribed to the service provider you are subscribed in, the calls will be free. It would be great if you have this kind of phone system. Today, it is now possible because of the advancement in the communications technology and this communication system is called VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol or sometimes referred to as Internet Voice.

The reason why calls are so cheap with VoIP is that it is connected to the internet. As most people know, the internet provides a free and open communication system. Another great thing about VoIP is because the data is transmitted in a digital format in the internet, transmission and reception of voice data is faster and clearer than ever before.

The fact that VoIP has so many benefits, many people are now considering getting rid of their conventional landline phones and getting hooked up with VoIP. As you can see, VoIP is one of the latest solutions in communications technology that will allow people to make much cheaper long distance calls than conventional landline phones.

However, you have to consider that there will sometimes be hiccups in your internet connection. Because of this, it can significantly affect your VoIP phone. It will result in garbled communication or it can result in delays. This is why QoS or Quality of Service is now being integrated into VoIP to provide a solution for garbled communication.

The two main benefits of QoS for VoIP are:

? It protects VoIP on shared media
? It can prioritize VoIP

Bursty data applications will result in lower quality VoIP as well as losing 2 VoIP packets.

You also have to consider that VoIP is sensitive to delays and jitters because of the occasional internet hiccups. With QoS prioritization, it will able to minimize its effects.

QoS can maximize the quality of VoIP by controlling bursts of excess bandwidth and traffic. QoS can avoid congestion of bandwidth thus, making quality better when you use VoIP.

The quality of service should be integrated in VoIP, especially for business VoIP to avoid miscommunication or delay in communication. Today, VoIP is still considered to be in its infancy. So, with all the bugs fixed, you can expect that VoIP will be integrated with QoS.

You have to consider the fact that VoIP is still not really perfect. For this reason, you have to have QoS with your VoIP. This will definitely improve the quality of communication and also decrease the effects of delays and garbled voice signals.

VoIP has so many benefits to offer people. You just have to consider that VoIP is still a relatively new technology. So, you should expect some bugs or some hiccups when making calls. However, if you want VoIP in your business, you should consider getting QoS to improve the quality of communication.

With QoS, you can certainly make sure that your VoIP will generate higher quality calls. So, if you are frequently experiencing garbled communication when you are using VoIP, you should consider getting QoS. This particular tool can definitely improve data transmission and reception.

Portraits of a queen: When the monarch becomes the subject

National Portrait Gallery, London

'Lightness of Being' by Chris Levine, 2004.

By Peter Jeary, NBC News

LONDON ? She is the most photographed woman in the world and no monarch has been more depicted in portraits.

Her image is everywhere ? from our English bank bills and postage stamps to countless photographs in newspapers and magazines. While not a royalist, I never tire of looking at pictures of Queen Elizabeth II, but I cannot tell you why.

Until now.

National Portrait Gallery, London

Queen Elizabeth II by Hiroshi Sugimoto, 1999.

Paul Woodhouse, curator of 'The Queen: Art and Image', an exhibition that recently opened at London's National Portrait Gallery, told me my fascination was shared by many.

"What we all try to do is understand the enigma," he said. "It's a paradox. We have all these images of her, but for most of us, we actually know very little about the queen."

And it's true. By looking at a range of different images?and listening to her occasional public statements, I hope to glean a little more about the woman, the great-grandmother, the human being behind the icon.

An early visitor to the exhibition, Gareth Jones, from Camden in London, agrees.

"You think you know things about her," he said. "But it's not until you see it laid-out like this that you start to appreciate the life she has led over sixty years. It's powerful."

Fit for a queen: 60 years of style

Jones, a self-described fan of the queen, found one work particularly revealing.

Looking at Chris Levine's 2004 holographic photograph?'Lightness of Being'?was like "intruding on a private moment, as the queen closes her eyes, almost in meditation," he said.

National Portrait Gallery, London

Queen Elizabeth II, by Pietro Annigoni, 1969.

Yvonne Bennett, from Sevenoaks, outside of London, was captivated by the same image.

"I could stand and look at it all day," she said.

Among the dozens of varied pictures, photographs and mixed media in the exhibition, one portrait stands out.? Amid the Pop Art, punk art and high art depictions, Hiroshi Sugimoto's 1999 portrait feels wrong and out of place.

One visitor wondered why it lacked the warmth of other pictures. We then discovered that the photograph is of a waxwork, and not the monarch herself.

Queen?Elizabeth II's lunch for world monarchs sparks controversy

There was a tangible difference between that portrait and, for example, a much earlier, highly formal painting by Pietro Annigoni, dating from 1954-5, the early years of her reign.

In the Annigoni, the young queen is noble and remote, like an empress, but also very human.

While the exhibit tells a story of a changing monarchy, it is also obvious that the queen has carefully controlled her image over the years.

NBC News

Kim Dong-Yoo's mosaic 'Elizabeth vs Diana', left, is made up of hundreds of tiny images of Princess Diana. A close-up view is shown at right.

"But when you compare portraits from one decade with another, you start to understand the preoccupations of the time, and then you appreciate that the queen has had to face some very dark times,? said Bridget Findlay of Portsmouth.?

Video: Queen?seen as inspiration at?Jubilee?parade

Findlay?s favorite was a reflection of those dark times: 'Elizabeth vs Diana' is a mosaic of the queen's head created from tiny images of Princess Diana, her erstwhile daughter-in-law who died in a car crash in 1997 after an embarrassingly public split with Prince Charles.

"It's simply startling," Findlay said.? "I never expected to see that and it took me a while to work out what it was."

The Queen makes her first televised Christmas broadcast on Dec. 25,1957.

Kim Dong-Yoo's 2007 mosaic ? one of several works that would be seen as irreverent if not almost disrespectful ? is confirmation that this is not an official exhibition sanctioned by Buckingham Palace. Instead, curator Paul Moorhouse called it a celebration for a diamond jubilee.

If I had to choose one image that summed up the exhibit for me, it would be a small, rather insignificant newspaper photograph of a family gathered around a TV set watching the queen's first televised?Christmas message broadcast in 1957.

She speaks while we, the observers, look and listen. Six decades on, are we any closer to knowing the most depicted woman in history?

Lockerbie bomber Megrahi dies in Libya

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the man convicted of blowing up Pan Am Flight 103 over Scotland, died after a long illness. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By NBC News, msnbc.com and news services

Updated at 3:30 p.m. ET: TRIPOLI - The former Libyan intelligence?officer convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270?people has died, his son told NBC News on Sunday. He was 60.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi died at home after his health quickly deteriorated. "He has been suffering from cancer for a long time and God choose him," Khalid al-Magrahi told NBC.

"He was too sick to utter anything on his death bed,"?his brother?Abdel Hakim told Reuters. "Just because Abdel Baset is dead doesn't mean the past is now erased. We will always tell the world that my brother was innocent.''

Al-Megrahi was convicted in 2001 of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 as it flew to New York from London. All 259 people aboard the airliner were killed and 11 others on the ground in the town of Lockerbie, Scotland, died from falling wreckage.

Scotland?freed him in 2009 on compassionate grounds because he was suffering from advanced terminal prostate cancer and thought to have months to live.?

Reuters

Convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi speaks during an interview at his home in Tripoli on Oct. 3, 2011. He was transferred to hospital on April 13, 2012 after his health deteriorated quickly.

His release angered many relatives of the victims, 189 of whom were American, and the Obama administration criticized the decision.

Many speculated that a backdoor deal had been cut between the former regime of Moammar Gadhafi and the British government. With the fall of the Gadhafi regime in 2011, many in the U.S. and U.K. called on the new Libyan leaders to extradite Megrahi to serve out the remainder of his prison term, something Libya's ruling National Transitional Council refused?to do.

Lockerbie relatives: 'Never thought this day would come'

The family of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi tell NBC News that he is in a coma, without medicine and near death. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Al-Megrahi, who served as an intelligence agent during the rule of Gadhafi, denied any role in suspected human rights abuses in his home country before Gadhafi's fall and death in a popular uprising last year.?

In April, al-Megrahi's condition worsened and he was taken to a private hospital to receive a transfusion of eleven liters of blood, but subsequently felt strong enough to return home.?

Megrahi's older brother, Mohamed, said the funeral will be after the noon prayer?on Monday.?He will be buried in Al Zagawani cemetary in Janzour,?12 miles west of Tripoli. Megrahi's house?was filled Sunday with family members, relatives and neighbors paying condolences, NBC News reported.

The White House said that the death would not end the quest for justice for the families of the 270 people killed.

"Megrahi's death concludes an unfortunate chapter following his release from prison in 2009 on medical grounds - a move we strongly opposed,'' said White House National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor.

"We want to see justice for the victims of the Lockerbie bombing and their families. We will continue working with our new partners in Libya toward a full accounting of Gadhafi's horrific acts,'' Vietor said.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer on Sunday criticized the Scottish government for allowing al-Megrahi to die a free man in what he said "smelled of a deal for oil.''

Schumer, a New York Democrat, said on CNN that the death of al-Megrahi meant the full truth about the Pan Am bombing may never be known.

"Both the Scottish and British governments have not been forthcoming,'' Schumer said. "The whole deal smelled of a deal for oil for this man's freedom and that was almost blasphemy given what a horrible person he was and the terrible destruction and tragedy that he caused. I don't know if we'll ever get to the bottom of it now.''

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was in opposition when al-Megrahi was freed, said in Chicago, where he was attending the NATO summit: "I've always been clear he should never have been released from prison.

''Today is a day to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act. Our thoughts should be with them and their families for the suffering they've had."

Jim Swire, the father of one of the British Lockerbie victims, said he was convinced al-Megrahi was innocent.

''I've been satisfied for some years that this man had nothing to do with the murder of my daughter and I grit my teeth every time I hear newscasters say 'Lockerbie bomber has died,'" he told BBC News television. ''This is a sad day."

HBT: Reds make Chapman closer

Sean Marshall has surrendered 22 hits and eight earned runs in 14 1/3 innings this year, struggling to solidify the Reds? ninth-inning role. So changes are being considered at the end of the Cincinnati ?pen.

According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Reds manager Dusty Baker spoke Saturday ?about switching Aroldis Chapman into the closer?s role,? and pushing Marshall back into setup duty ? something he?s far more familiar with.

?[Chapman] has been so good in the eighth,? Baker told reporters after Saturday?s 6-5 victory over the Yankees. ?Like I said, you?ve got to graduate to that position. Who knows maybe graduation time is here? We?re got to discuss it, talk about it. Matter of fact, we already talked to him about it. ? We had to revamp and come up with a Plan B. So we?ll see about Plan C.?

If Chapman starts locking down saves ? which he?s completely capable of ? and becomes the Reds? regular closer, you?d have to think Baker and Co. might just run with with the strategy. Which would, unfortunately, push the 24-year-old Cuban left-hander further away from the rotation spot where he belongs.

Chapman hasn?t allowed an earned run in 17 relief appearances this season and boasts a 38/7 K/BB ratio in 21 1/3 innings. He?s one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball and has experience with starting, and yet the Reds won?t maximize his value. It?s simple math. Justin Verlander has already pitched over 67 innings.

********************

UPDATE, 11:38 AM: It?s official, according to Fay: Chapman is the Reds? new closer.

We would like to give away one paying customer. We aquired this customer in the purchase of another company but they do not fit into our business model.

The specs of the package are:

100MB
5GB bandwidth
Cpanel

They only use 2mb of disk space.

The previous company charged them $47.40 per year with a free domain name. The domain name is held in an account at Resellerclub and will be pushed to your account or you can transfer to your own registrar.

We would like to give this customer away to the first respondent who can take them. We will supply the domain name auth code to transfer and a cpanel backup so you can restore to your service. Once a suitable host is found and the transfer is made we will let the customer know.

Please PM me and we can make the transaction tonight.

Thanks
