The portable Android gaming console GameStick proved to be a hit when it reached its $10,000 Kickstarter goal in just two days ? and here at GDC 2013 PlayJam is showing off the the developer version that will be shortly shipping out to some early backers. In concept, the GameStick is similar to the Ouya: it's a gaming console powered by Android, complete with its own proprietary gaming store. But while the Ouya focused on creating a stylish box of its own, the hook with the GameStick is portability. The guts of the console are a stick roughly the size of a USB thumb drive that plugs into the HDMI port on your television ? and slots back into the GameStick controller itself if you'd like to take it to your friend's house.

The squared-off shape is charming

PlayJam showed off two versions of the GameStick at an event this evening: a dummy mock-up of the final version, which was helpful in terms of gauging aesthetics but had no moving parts whatsoever, and the developer kit units. The controller for the latter is a mix of happy surprises and somewhat questionable choices. On one hand, the buttons are nice and clicky ? though we would have liked more throw in the shoulder buttons ? and the analog sticks felt snappy. Considering the choices the company is having to make to meet the final product's $79 price point, it's a solid combo. While an odd choice at first glance, the squared-off shape is charming ? it actually brought back memories of the original Nintendo Entertainment System controller ? but it's also quite large, making it a little awkward to hold. While some aspects of the final controller could shift, the size does appear to be final.

How does it hold up to actual gameplay? Unfortunately, we weren't able to try that. While the units on hand were fully-functional mechanically, the company told us they weren't yet working with the actual GameStick unit itself. The developer unit also doesn't incorporate the GameStick's clever all-in-one storage feature, due in part to the larger console stick the dev unit uses.

A clean and sparse interface

We were able to try out the interface and play a few games using a third-party controller, however. The interface is clean and sparse ? games, media, settings, and a developer section are listed on the left, while large icons fill the rest of the screen. A set of buttons on the top of the screen of the games section let you switch between the GameStick's own store, and the games you already have downloaded. On the media side of things, the GameStick features both Netflix and XBMC. The speed of the UI wasn't breathtaking, but it was responsive enough for a device at this price point, and it never felt like it was noticeably lagging.

The same was true with gameplay itself. I spent some time playing Vector, and while performance wasn't as impressive as you seen on high-end smartphones, I also wasn't expecting that kind of firepower. The GameStick is clearly a device targeted towards casual gamers, and with that intent in mind there's an undeniable charm to the concept.

It will all come down to games

Of course, games will be one of the major deciding factors on whether products like the GameStick or Ouya will find success in the marketplace. Stoking developer interest is a big part of why PlayJam is at GDC in the first place. The company estimates it will have 20 to 30 high-end games on the GameStick when the final product ships to its Kickstarter backers in April. While that may be enough to keep those early adopters happy, it will have to expand that selection of titles quickly if it wants to compete as a true consumer product. We'll know more when the GameStick goes on sale at retail outlets later this year.

Apple updates Find My Friends with new UI, more in-depth location controls

We haven't seen many changes to Apple's location-based Find My Friends app since it debuted on iOS 5 more than a year ago. Cupertino must have realized it's time for an update; the company just overhauled the feature to include a new UI and more accurate location-based alerts. The app will now let you define the distance from a location for receiving notifications -- so you can get a ping when a friend arrives at the campus library rather than the dorms, for instance. The redesigned app also simplifies the notification process to fit on one page, with options to receive alerts when your friends arrive at or leave a specific place, along with settings for notifying others based on your location. The update is available now for users running iOS 6.1 or later.

Engineers enable 'bulk' silicon to emit visible light for the first time

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Electronic computing speeds are brushing up against limits imposed by the laws of physics. Photonic computing, where photons replace comparatively slow electrons in representing information, could surpass those limitations, but the components of such computers require semiconductors that can emit light.

Now, research from the University of Pennsylvania has enabled "bulk" silicon to emit broad-spectrum, visible light for the first time, opening the possibility of using the element in devices that have both electronic and photonic components.

The research was conducted by associate professor Ritesh Agarwal, postdoctoral fellow Chang-Hee Cho and graduate students Carlos O. Aspetti and Joohee Park, all of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Their work was published in Nature Photonics.

Certain semiconductors, when imparted with energy, in turn emit light; they directly produce photons, instead of producing heat. This phenomenon is commonplace and used in light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, which are ubiquitous in traffic signals, new types of light bulbs, computer displays and other electronic and optoelectronic devices. Getting the desired photonic properties often means finding the right semiconducting material. Agarwal's group produced the first ever all-optical switch out of cadmium sulfide nanowires, for example.

Semiconducting materials -- especially silicon -- form the backbone of modern electronics and computing, but, unfortunately, silicon is an especially poor emitter of light. It belongs to a group of semiconducting materials, which turns added energy into heat. This makes integrating electronic and photonic circuits a challenge; materials with desirable photonic properties, such as cadmium sulfide, tend to have poor electrical properties and vice versa and are not compatible with silicon-based electronic devices.

"The problem is that electronic devices are made of silicon and photonic devices are typically not," Agarwal said. "Silicon doesn't emit light and the materials that do aren't necessarily the best materials for making electronic devices."

With silicon entrenched as the material of choice for the electronics industry, augmenting its optical properties so it could be integrated into photonic circuitry would make consumer-level applications of the technology more feasible.

"People have tried to solve this problem by doping silicon with other materials, but the light emission is then in the very long wavelength range, so it's not visible and not very efficient and can degrade its electronic properties," Agarwal said. "Another approach is to make silicon devices that are very small, five nanometers in diameter or less. At that size you have quantum confinement effects, which allows the device to emit light, but making electrical connections at that scale isn't currently feasible, and the electrical conductivity would be very low."

To get elemental, "bulk" silicon to emit light, Agarwal's team drew upon previous research they had conducted on plasmonic cavities. In that earlier work, the researchers wrapped a cadmium sulfide nanowire first in a layer of silicon dioxide, essentially glass, and then in a layer of silver. The silver coating supports what are known as surface plasmons, waves that are a combination of oscillating metal electrons and of light. These surface plasmons are highly confined to the surface where the silicon dioxide and silver layers meet. For certain nanowire sizes, the silver coating creates pockets of resonance and hence highly confined electromagnetic fields -- in other words, light -- within the nanostructure.

Normally, after excitation the semiconductor must first "cool down," releasing energy as heat, before "jumping" back to the ground state and finally releasing the remaining energy as light. The Penn team's semiconductor nanowires coupled with plasmonic nanocavities, however, can jump directly from a high-energy excited state to the ground state, all but eliminating the heat-releasing cool-down period. This ultra-fast emission time opens the possibility of producing light from semiconductors such as silicon that might otherwise only produce heat.

"If we can make the carriers recombine immediately," Agarwal said, "then we can produce light in silicon."

In their latest work, the group wrapped pure silicon nanowires in a similar fashion, first with a coating of glass and then one of silver. In this case, however, the silver did not wrap completely around the wire as the researchers first mounted the glass-coated silicon on a sperate pane of glass. Tucking under the curve of the wire but unable to go between it and the glass substrate, the silver coating took on the shape of the greek letter omega -- ? -- while still acting as a plasmonic cavity.

Critically, the transparent bottom of the omega allowed the researchers to impart energy to the semiconductor with a laser and then examine the light silicon emitted.

Even though the silicon nanowire is excited at a single energy level, which corresponds to the wavelength of the blue laser, it produces white light that spans the visible spectrum. This translates into a broad bandwidth for possible operation in a photonic or optoelectronic device. In the future, it should also be possible to excite these silicon nanowires electrically.

"If you can make the silicon emit light itself, you don't have to have an external light source on the chip," Agarwal said. "We could excite the silicon electrically and get the same effect, and we can make it work with wires from 20 to 100 nanometers in diameter, so it's very compatible in terms of length scale with current electronics."

The research was supported by the U.S. Army Research Office and the National Institutes of Health.

NYC aquarium rebounds, rebuilds after Sandy

NEW YORK (AP) ? The New York Aquarium has cherished its big-city setting by the sea for half a century. But the ocean that is the aquarium's lifeblood dealt it a shattering blow last fall.

Superstorm Sandy's surge overran carefully calibrated tanks with oily, debris-filled water, knocked out even backup power to all the exhibits and made it impossible to check on some of them for days. Managers contemplated shipping animals away and wondered whether the institution itself could survive in its spot on Coney Island.

Five months later, more than 80 percent of the collection is intact, and visitors should be able to see walruses, angelfish, otters and others when about half the aquarium reopens late spring. A planned expansion remains on track, now coupled with rebuilding and floodproofing an institution that aims to be an object lesson in enduring on the shore.

"I don't think we could abandon this facility. Not that we didn't think about it ? we thought through everything," aquarium Director Jon Forrest Dohlin said this week as he stood amid pipes and cables in a now-empty jellyfish exhibit.

"We want to be here, and we also want to be able to talk to the community about what we did, how we handled this, and how the city of New York can start to look toward the future of living in this coastal environment."

As he walked through the 14-acre grounds, penguins watched like squat sentries from their outdoor habitat. Walruses snoozed as sea lions arced through the air on their trainers' cues, staying in practice for shows to resume in a few months. Angelfish and other tropical species shimmered around a coral reef and hefty pacu, a fruit-eating piranha relative, hovered in an Amazonian display in the one building where exhibit space wasn't flooded.

But the effects of the Oct. 29 storm were still starkly visible elsewhere.

The floor was torn out of a building that houses jellyfish, seahorses, lungfish and other unusual creatures. Many were still there but set to start moving next month to other aquariums while their facility is rebuilt. The open pool in front of it was drained dry; it housed hundreds of freshwater koi that died in the saltwater surge.

Sharks, sea turtles and rays circled serenely in a tank in the aquarium's veterinary hospital. They're healthy but were shuttled there after the storm put an exclamation point on plans to reinvent their exhibit. Nearby, the gutted cafeteria still has "Happy Halloween!" signs on its windows.

There's no firm date yet for this spring's partial reopening. The rest of the exhibits, including the new $120 million shark display, are to open in 2016.

Meanwhile, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the aquarium, is determining how much insurance and government aid may pay toward fixing roughly $65 million in estimated damage.

The aquarium was founded in 1896 in lower Manhattan. It moved in 1957 to Coney Island, a faded seaside playground now striving for rebirth. Drawing more than 750,000 visitors a year, it's "the economic engine for Coney Island," says City Councilman Domenic Recchia Jr., who represents the area.

Aquariums are often built by the water and have proven vulnerable to hurricanes. New Orleans' Audubon Aquarium of the Americas lost thousands of fish when generators failed after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It reopened about five months later.

In Galveston, Texas, Hurricane Ike's storm surge in 2008 killed about three-quarters of the fish in Moody Gardens' rainforest exhibit, General Manager Robert Callies said. The exhibit reopened in 2011 after bringing back hundreds of birds, reptiles and mammals sent to other zoos after the storm.

At the New York Aquarium, Sandy's surge coursed through air-intake vents in flood doors under the Coney Island boardwalk, punched through sand into the parking lot and rushed in from the parking lot after a creek overflowed blocks away.

As the water rose three feet high in Dohlin's ground-floor office, he watched it pour down a stairwell into a basement that housed exhibits and the equipment that keeps them alive.

"'We lost the aquarium,'" he thought.

Basements were under up to 15 feet of water. Generators were either damaged or useless because equipment needed to distribute their power was fried. The pump house that draws from the ocean to refresh the 1.5 million-gallon exhibits was out of commission, as were systems that treat the seawater, tailor it to different environments and maintain the oxygen levels, temperatures and water chemistry the aquarium's 12,000 animals need.

None had been evacuated. That would have been very difficult to arrange in the few days the aquarium had to prepare, Dohlin said.

Scrambling to save the collection, 18 staffers used hospital-style canisters to get crucial oxygen into the water, rebuilt filters and pumps on the fly and called in equipment from the Wildlife Conservation Society's four zoos. They mixed artificial seawater in garbage cans and warmed rooms with space heaters to keep water temperatures up, animal operations director David DeNardo said.

At the same time, managers weighed how much longer they had to get systems going before having to ship animals away, an unwelcome prospect for already stressed creatures. On Nov. 1, the wildlife society announced that a decision would probably have to be made in 24 hours. But key systems were at least partially running in all the exhibits two days later, and the animals stayed.

The koi and some other fish were dead. But many other fish and all the mammals were fine ? including Mitik, an orphaned walrus calf that arrived only weeks before. He seemed to enjoy splashing in a couple of feet of surge water, Dohlin said.

A 3-foot-long American eel disappeared from its tank but turned up, unharmed, in a staff shower stall. Seahorses held on to life despite the cold, dirty surge water that flowed into their tropical tanks.

Now, plans call for raising the new shark building several feet higher to meet new flood-zone predictions, moving air intake vents from the flood doors to the roof, moving electrical panels out of basements and installing full-height storm doors on some glass doors that were only partly protected.

It's an unexpected chance, Dohlin says, to improve both the aquarium's exhibits and endurance at once.

"Not to let any crisis go to waste," he said. "That's the real opportunity here."

Editor's desk: GDC bound!

I'm about to leave for San Francisco, California and the Game Developer Conference (GDC 2013). I certainly don't have to tell anyone here how great the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad are for gaming. Whether or not Apple "gets" gaming, they've enabled a lot of technology that a lot of developers have used to make great games. That's why, increasingly, iOS is a big deal in the gaming industry, and at events like GDC.

I'll be there along with our gaming editor Simon Sage, and Windows Phone Central's Paul Acevedo. Our goal at the show is to get a better idea of where mobile gaming is going in 2013, get a look at some upcoming titles, and do our very best to bring you all with us. Most of the local small families running stores offering the homely personal touch are now being all swallowed up by the latest market dominants, the supermarkets and the chain stores which sell almost anything and everything you may need for the day to day life.

It is a really depressing and pathetic scene where numerous out of town retail parks and supermarkets are uprooting the locals and taking their places. Virtually, each major town or city is basically a carbon copy of one other. Anywhere you travel; there is not much diversity or change you can find anymore. In every city or town, it?s the usual brand of coffee shops, all the same cloth stores, the usual chains of garden care companies, DIY or the same restaurants or electrical outlets.These small businesses owners are struggling to survive a losing battle and are loosing their lifeblood as it is being sucked out.

Although there are moments that push the story a bit beyond credulity, Shortland has created something remarkable by forcing us to find within ourselves sympathy for this would-be Aryan princess.

Stunning, admirable and indelible - truthfully chronicling the triumph of the human spirit - in a class with Michael Haneke's 'The White Ribbon.'

Can we spare some sympathy or hope for the children of villains, even if they too show signs of their parents' evil? Lore provides no easy answers.

The portrait is miniature and yet indelible, a ghostly reminder of the 20th century.

Shortland is a master of tone here, beginning with a nightmarish, chaotic flight which grows darker during the journey and, perhaps darkest of all, at its final destination.

Remarkable for its unusual perspective...but never manages to connect emotionally as deeply as it might have.

Freeway Ricky Ross has hit another snag in his quest for legal vindication over allegations that Rick Ross stole his identity. On Wednesday (March 20), a judge rejected the argument filed against Warner Bros., who he believes assisted the Maybach Music rapper.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the former drug kingpin, vowed to take his battle to appeals court.?"California Appeals Court briefs are due in a few weeks," he said.?"Judge believes that even a new contract still falls under Single publication, our position is that it is republication as in Nestle v. Chistophe. We feel good about our case.

"This is classic republication as to all defendants there was consistently new music, management decisions and product made. The statute of limitations was never meant to be used to hide defendants actively infringing with new decisions and campaigns."

Ross has suffered setbacks before. Last year,?he was ordered to cover his alleged impostor's $500,000 legal fees.

Aside from the litigation, he's also prepping a film about his life, in which Nick Cannon will star.

Sony Xperia E officially on sale in the UK, costing ?129.99

Sony's latest entry level offering, the Xperia E, is now officially on sale in the UK. In the past it had been pegged for a February release, but retailer Clove Technology now has the device for sale for the pretty reasonable price of £129.99. 

Only the black versions are currently available -- white ones are due sometime in April. For your money, you're getting a solid entry level Android smartphone. Better still, it's a solid entry level smartphone running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. 

Other specs include a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 3.5-inch HVGA display, 4GB of onboard storage, 512MB of RAM a microSD card slot and a respectable for its size, 1500mAh battery. 

This is by no means going to excite those that breathe bleeding edge devices, but the Xperia E also has a little party piece. Sony has released an experimental Firefox OS ROM for the Xperia E, so for those so inclined, it's not an overly expensive way of checking that out either.

Research explores links between physical and emotional pain relief

Mar. 21, 2013 ? Though we all desire relief -- from stress, work, or pain -- little is known about the specific emotions underlying relief. New research from the Association for Psychological Science explores the psychological mechanisms associated with relief that occurs after the removal of pain, also known as pain offset relief.

This new research shows that healthy individuals and individuals with a history of self-harm display similar levels of relief when pain is removed, which suggests that pain offset relief may be a natural mechanism that helps us to regulate our emotions.

Feeling Worse to Feel Better: Pain-Offset Relief Simultaneously Stimulates Positive Affect and Reduces Negative Affect

Research shows that feeling pain leads to negative emotions, but less is known about the relief that occurs when pain is removed. Is pain offset associated with positive emotions, or simply the alleviation of negative emotions?

Franklin and colleagues used recording electrodes to measure participants' negative emotions (eyeblink startle response) and positive emotions (muscle activity behind the ear) in response to loud noises; sometimes the loud noise was presented alone and other times it was presented 3.5, 6, or 14 seconds after receiving a low- or high-intensity shock.

Participants showed increased positive emotions and decreased negative emotions after pain offset. The greatest increases in positive emotion tended to occur soon after high-intensity shocks, whereas the greatest decreases in negative emotions tended to occur soon after low-intensity shocks.

These findings shed light on the emotional nature of pain offset relief, and could provide insight into why some people seek relief through self-injurious behavior.

The Nature of Pain Offset Relief in Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: A Laboratory Study

In this study, the researchers examined whether the emotional relief that comes with physical pain removal might be a potential mechanism that could help to explain why some people engage in self-harm behaviors.

Participants with or without a history of self-harm were assessed for emotion dysregulation and reactivity, self-injurious behavior, and for psychiatric disorders. Using a similar recording electrode procedure as in the first study, Franklin and colleagues were able to measure positive and negative emotions in response to loud noises, either alone or after receiving a painful shock.

Surprisingly, healthy individuals displayed pain offset relief levels that were comparable to those of individuals with a history of self-harm, and there was no correlation between pain offset relief and self-harm frequency.

These results do not support the hypothesis that heightened pain offset relief is a risk factor for future self-injury. Instead, Franklin and colleagues speculate that the biggest risk factors for nonsuicidal self-injury may concern how some people overcome the instinctive barriers that keep most people from inflicting self-harm.

NO SHUTDOWN SHOWDOWN FOR NOW: The Senate did its part yesterday to stave off a government shutdown by passing a continuing resolution in order to keep the government funded, ABC's Sunlen Miller reports. The continuing resolution, known in Washington shorthand as the CR, is a stopgap appropriations measure. Congress has been up against a March 27 deadline this time around to keep the government funded through September, the end of the fiscal year. The bill passed with a vote of 73-26. The Senate bill keeps the same spending levels as the House bill, setting the top-line overall rate of spending at $982 billion, down from $1.043 trillion the previous fiscal year, but adds three appropriations measures: for homeland security and commerce; agriculture; and justice and science funds. http://abcn.ws/11gYjxD

UP NEXT (UPDATED): The House passed the Continuing Resolution this morning. And, ABC's Ann Compton confirms that President Obama will sign the measure when he returns to Washington from the Middle East.

THE FINE PRINT: During the same week that Senate Democrats shelved their attempts to re-instate the assault weapons ban, the continuing resolution that is expected advance to President Obama's desk will make four long-standing gun protections permanent, ABC's Sunlen Miller notes. The four gun provisions are: (1) A measure which would prevent the Justice Department from requiring firearms dealers to conduct inventories to make sure weapons haven't been stolen; (2) A measure which would prevent the government from changing the definition of antique guns; (3) A measure which would prevent the Justice Department from denying a license to firearms dealers who report no business activity; (4) A measure that would require the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to include language in firearms data stating that the information can't be used to make conclusions about gun crimes.

BOTTOM LINE: ABC's News Political Director Rick Klein notes that the first gun control legislation set to pass Congress in the wake of Sandy Hook actually loosens gun controls.

THE ROUNDTABLE

ABC's MICHAEL FALCONE: Anyone else starting to see a pattern here? In yet another poll, Hillary Clinton bests her potential Republican competition in hypothetical 2016 match-ups. The latest numbers come from a Quinnipiac survey of 1,000 registered voters in Florida, a crucial swing state that Mitt Romney lost to President Obama last November. Pitting the former First Lady and Secretary of State against former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, she leads by a 51 to 40 percent margin and in a head-to-head race against Sen. Marco Rubio, she prevails 52 percent to 41 percent. Notably, Clinton is viewed favorably by 62 percent of voters in the state, whereas Bush only gets a 50 percent favorability rating and Rubio an even lower mark - 41 percent. "If she decides to make the race, she begins with a sizable lead in a state that Republicans cannot win the White House without," said Quinnipiac pollster Peter A. Brown. "Florida voters have a very positive view of Mrs. Clinton and it's not just Democrats who feel that way."

ABC's ARLETTE SAENZ: Even though the assault weapons ban won't be part of the comprehensive gun package considered on the Senate floor next month, Vice President Joe Biden and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg are sticking to their guns to ensure some type of firearm legislation does get enacted. The two will meet with the families of victims of the Newtown shooting to discuss gun reform today in NYC, and in an interview with NPR's "All Things Considered" Wednesday, the vice president said he's still hoping the assault weapons ban will pass eventually because it is "the will of the people." "My experience, having been the only guy that did this once before, along with Dianne Feinstein and others, is that this doesn't necessarily happen in one fell swoop," Biden said of the assault weapons ban. "We are going to continue to push for logical, gun safety regulations. Eventually the will of the people is going to prevail and we're going to keep at it."

ABC's CHRIS GOOD: Have the voters really forgiven Mark Sanford? That's the big question hanging over his comeback race, but who really knows? Sanford beat expectations in his 16-way primary, taking 37 percent, whereas state GOP insiders expected him to collect below 30 percent. One of them suggested to me that a 25 percent showing would be kind of abysmal for a guy with ultra-high name recognition. But who's to say whether or not 37 percent is actually good? After all, more people voted against him than for him. There were so many candidates in this primary, some of them state and local lawmakers with their own bases in the district, that it's hard to see any way to accurately judge Sanford's performance as a referendum on his public image rehabilitation. We'll have to wait until the April 2 runoff.

ABC's SHUSHANNAH WALSHE: In a conversation with Tea Party leaders about their continued support of Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul - even after his immigration announcement this week - an interesting theme emerged: openness to reform. Though the issue is not traditionally in their wheelhouse, some Tea Party leaders expressed support. Sal Russo, founder of the Tea Party Express told me, "I think the immigration issue is an important issue and Republicans have looked like they have their head in the sand and are not being serious about addressing a problem ? People are in this country a long time and they are not legal. We have to get them legal in some way in a process that gets people legal that are here?We should do it because it's the right thing." Matt Kibbe, the president and CEO of Tea Party ally FreedomWorks, said Paul's proposal is in the "framework of our principals." "We believe in the rule of law," Kibbe said. "Treat everyone just like everybody else, but we believe if you want to come to this country and work the government has a responsibility to make the process as efficient as possible."

OBAMA IN ISRAEL: President Obama's busy day of sight-seeing and political outreach is already well underway, ABC's Mary Bruce notes. In the morning, he visited the Israel Museum to see the Dead Sea Scrolls. He also visited West Bank city of Ramallah to meet with Palestinian Authority President Abbas. Back in Jerusalem (at about 11 a.m. ET) President Obama is set to deliver remarks to Israeli youth at the convention center, the centerpiece of his effort to court the Israeli public while he's overseas. Obama rounds out his day with dinner with Israeli President Shimon Peres (2 p.m. ET). THE BACKDROP: As President Obama headed to the West Bank for talks with President Mahmoud Abbas earlier today, rockets were fired from Gaza toward the southern Israeli town of Sderot, reports ABC's ALEXANDER MARQUARDT. This is only the second rocketing incident since the ceasefire was brokered following November's eight-day conflict. It highlights the divide among the Palestinians (Gaza vs. the West Bank, Hamas vs. Fatah), the view among Israelis that Palestinians don't want peace and the lack of optimism around here that Obama's trip will result in new talks.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

GERARD BUTLER AND AARON ECKHART BRING ACTION TO DC IN NEW MOVIE. Imagine, if you will, that terrorists seize control of the White House and take the president hostage-that's the plot of Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart's new action-packed film "Olympus Has Fallen." Now, imagine showing that film to a theater full of Secret Service agents and politicians-that's what happened at the film's DC premiere . Butler and Eckhart jokingly tell Top Line that they were worried they might "be stoned" at the premiere but were pleasantly surprised. "They loved it," Butler told ABC's Reena Ninan and Yahoo! News' Olivier Knox about the audience's reaction. In the film, Butler plays the role of a disgraced Secret Service agent who gets demoted following a tragic accident that results in the death of the first lady, played by Ashley Judd. TEA PARTIERS STAND BY RAND PAUL. Tea Partiers still love Rand Paul. His new immigration proposal-which includes backing a pathway to citizenship-doesn't seem to have changed their opinion of him, ABC's SHUSHANNAH WALSHE notes. Instead, Tea Party faithful say it is an example of his forthrightness as well as their own openness to reform. Sal Russo, founder of the Tea Party Express, called Paul a "favorite of the group," and despite the movement's focus on the national debt, spending and economic issues he praised Paul's "willingness to stand up and take a principled stand" on immigration. Matt Kibbe, the president and CEO of Tea Party ally FreedomWorks, said he does not think Paul's immigration announcement hurt his potential 2016 presidential aspirations. "I think he's sort of risen to the top of the GOP ladder simply by putting ideas back on the table," Kibbe said, referring to both the filibuster and his budget plan. "All of these ideas that most Republicans pay lip service to, he's putting specifics on the table. MARK SANFORD CAMPAIGN RISING FROM DISGRACE. Mark Sanford appears to be getting a head start in his primary runoff, ABC's CHRIS GOOD notes. The scandalized former South Carolina governor won Tuesday's 16-way primary for his old House seat, but there's some confusion about whom he'll face in Round 2, a GOP runoff slated for April 2. With 100 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, former Charleston County councilman Curtis Bostic led state Sen. Larry Grooms by 493 votes, which would trigger an automatic recount. But in a statement yesterday, grooms indicated he wasn't going to put up a fight, paving the way for a head-to-head matchup between Sanford and Bostic for the right to take n Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch in the general election on May 7. http://abcn.ws/Y6xsY8

LARRY GROOMS BOWS OUT IN S.C.: "By a voting margin of less than 1%, my plans to represent South Carolina's 1st Congressional District have ended. 1 Thessalonians 5 teaches us that we should give thanks in all things. While there is great disappointment for coming so very close in such an incredibly difficult election, there is no doubt cause to give thanks and rejoice," Grooms said in a statement yesterday. "To the possibility of a recount, as I understand it, the state Election Commission will begin an automatic recount as outlined by state law - and I will be the 'official' third place finisher in the race. TREE OBAMA PLANTED IN JERUSALEM MAY BE UPROOTED. It's an old gospel song: Just like a tree planted by the water, I shall not be moved. But, as ABC's REENA NINAN notes, if you're the magnolia tree the president of the United States planted today in Jerusalem, there's a chance you might be moved. Obama planted a tree on Wednesday in Israeli President Shimon Peres's Jerusalem garden. It's a gift for a man Obama said has planted "the seeds of progress, the seeds of security, the seeds of peace - all the seeds that have helped not only Israel grow but also the relationship between our two nations grow." The tree was meant to signify the strong roots of the relationship between the United States and Israel. But before these American roots can take hold, the Israeli government will inspect them. An Israeli official tells ABC News that the magnolia tree will be tested and possibly removed in a week by the Israeli Agriculture Department. The roots of the tree were apparently kept in a plastic covering during the planting. As in the U.S., Israeli law forbids plants and trees from other countries from entering Israel. FOUNDATION TO COVER SEQUESTER CUTS TO IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN SCHOLARSHIPS. A Florida-based charity announced that it will cover the funding cut from scholarships for children of military members who died fighting in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars because of sequestration. ABC's SARAH PARNASS reported Tuesday that scholarships were being cut by as much as $2,133.81 per recipient this year because of automatic budget cuts to the Department of Education included in the sequester legislation. The Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, a Jacksonville Beach organization that helps children of military members who perished while on active duty to finance their education, said it will use funding from private donations to cover the gap left by sequester cuts. "We work with our children any way to find them all available funding and grants towards college," Executive Director John Coogan told ABC News. Coogan said the organization dedicates every dollar of donations to identifying children of the fallen, advising them on how best to find grants and scholarships for higher education, and covering whatever costs are left over. http://abcn.ws/Zehbd1

Today, the American Pizza Community - a coalition of pizza franchises led by Domino's as well as hundreds of family owned grocery and convenience stores across the country are holding a bi-partisan press conference today on Capitol Hill to unveil legislation aimed at amending calorie and nutritional requirements in the Affordable Care Act. The "Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act of 2013? does away with what supporters say are "unnecessary regulation requiring restaurants, including franchised chains with 20 or more locations, to post calorie and nutritional information for all of their products on in-store menu boards costing locally owned businesses up to $4,000 per year. For a company like Domino's, a company that already posts an online calorie calculator, that means in store menu boards for all of its 34 million pizza combinations. Ninety percent of Domino's customers, who get their food delivered, will never step foot inside the store to even see the signs." Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Washington State, Chair of the House Republican Conference, will lead a 1:45 p.m. ET press conference advocating for the "Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act." She will be joined by fellow members: Rep. John Barrow (D-GA), Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC), Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Rep.
