Crop And Constrain Photos On Your iPhone Or iPad For Better Pics [iOS Tips]

Crop And Constrain Photos On Your iPhone Or iPad For Better Pics [iOS Tips]

Here?s how it looks on the iPad.

One of the best tools in a photographer?s editing kit is the crop. Finding the best part of a picture and cutting out all else is a fantastic way to make an ordinary picture into a great picture.

You can do this right on your iPhone or iPad with the Photos app. Here?s how.

Open the Photos app with a tap, and then tap on the picture you want to crop. Tap the Edit button in the upper right, then choose the Crop tool in the lower right. The Photos app will create a grid with draggable handles around it. Simply tap and drag any of the corner handles to define the area of your crop.

Even better, you can tap the Constrain button on the lower left to pic one of several popular proportions for photos, like Square, 4X3, 5X7, and 16X9, to name a few. This will help if you?re trying to define your picture to print on a specific paper size. Once constrained, you can tap and drag the photo around to fit perfectly within the constraining grid lines.

When you?re done, tap Crop in the upper left, then Save, and your iOS device will make it so. This feature, along with the Enhance tool, can make your mediocre snapshots into something you might want to print and display ? totally worth the couple of seconds it takes to crop it well.

What's up dock? Apple to shrink connector for next iPhone

Apple's new iPhone will drop the wide dock connector used in the company's gadgets for the best part of a decade in favor of a smaller one, a change likely to annoy the Apple faithful but which could be a boon for accessory makers.

The iPhone 5, Apple's next generation iPhone expected to go on sale around October, will come with a 19-pin connector port at the bottom instead of the proprietary 30-pin port "to make room for the earphone moving to the bottom", two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

That would mean the new phone would not connect with the myriad of accessories such as speakers and power chargers that form part of the ecosystem around iPods, iPads and iPhones, without an adaptor.

That means new business, analysts say.

"It represents an opportunity for accessory vendors," said Pete Cunningham, London-based analyst at technology research firm Canalys. "The iPhone connector has been a standard for a long time now and I would expect the same to be true for a new connector, should Apple change it as expected."

Apple did not immediately reply to an emailed request for comment.

Tech blogs have long speculated on the demise of the 30-pin connector, which at 21 mm wide takes up a chunk of space, especially as the latest technologies such as microUSB offer more power in less space.

They say that a smaller connector would give Apple more scope for new product designs or a bigger battery, or simply to make ever smaller products.

Switzerland's Logitech, one of the biggest makers of Apple speakers, declined to comment.

But some enterprising vendors in China have already begun offering cases for the new phone, complete with earphone socket on the bottom and a "guarantee" the dimensions are correct.

For some in the peripherals industry, the change could open doors to new business.

"iPod docking speaker sales have been declining for one or two years," said an employee of a Hong Kong-based company that designs speakers especially for Apple products.

"My previous factory is a lucky one. They shifted the focus to Bluetooth speakers, which proved a wise decision now," the employee said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"It looks like while iPod speaker sales are going down, Bluetooth speaker sales are going up."

Happy to upgrade?
Apple has already said that some users of older models of its Macbook computers won't be able to use the latest operating system to be announced soon, but analysts think it will be kinder to mobile gadget users.

"Apple needs to find a solution not to disappoint their current clients who want to upgrade to the new iPhone but are tied to an expensive accessory that have bought," said Franciso Jeronimo, London-based analyst at technology research firm IDC.

"I believe Apple will come up with some sort of adaptor so the new iPhone can be used with previous connectors."

It could be a difficult change for Apple to manage, even with an adaptor.

"With a smaller connector, what am I going to do with my loudspeaker at home and the fitness pack that I use when I go to the gym? That's the question," said 24-year old Travis Tam, who owns an iPhone 4 and works as an account executive at a social networking company in Hong Kong.

"I feel that the premium gap between the next iPhone 5 and newest Android models is getting much smaller these days. That will mean that details such as having a smaller connector will mean more in whether I will continue to use an iPhone and switch to other Android phones."

A salesman surnamed Chan at an Apple reseller in Hong Kong thought a smaller connector would be a "pain", and would spoil the clean lines and seamless connectivity that is Apple's trademark.

"There are ways around it as some of the speakers have an audio input point that can be connected directly to any iPhone with a earphone jack. It's not a very elegant way of doing things, but it's an alternative," he said.

In the end though, Apple fans are Apple fans.

"I don't think it will stop Apple consumers from buying the new gadgets," said C.K. Lu, Taipei-based analyst at research firm Gartner. "Many companies are interested in developing accessories for Apple because Apple users are more open and willing to buy accessories."

Apple demands $2.02, plus $3.10... equals a total of $2.5 billion in Samsung damages

Apple demands $2.02, plus $3.10, equals a total of $2.5 billion in Samsung damages How big is $2.525 billion when you're Apple? It won't affect living standards in Cupertino, that's for sure, but it's evidently enough to be worth hauling a rival through the US courts. The figure is revealed in Apple's damages claim, submitted in the run-up to its battle with Samsung in California, and is quite separate to other claims in Europe and Australia. If you're not already sick and tired of this feud, then the sums behind that big amorphous total make for curious reading.

According to a unit cost breakdown by Foss Patents, Apple wants $2.02 for every previously sold Samsung product that uses "overscroll bounce," another $2.02 for those that allow "tap to zoom and navigate," $3.10 for those that involve a "scrolling API," plus a mega $24 for each and every device that breaks an Apple design patent or trade dress right. That means the bulk of Apple's claim -- as much as $2 billion -- is actually for aesthetic rather than technical infringements. Of course, these figures have no bearing on what the US court may eventually decide to award to either party, and neither do they factor in any strategic value of the blood from Samsung's nose, or the negative PR that can only grow amid such litigious behavior.

HungerShield Nutritionist Offers 5 Tips for Summer Weight Loss ...

Scarsdale, New York (PRWEB) July 18, 2012

Registered Dietitian and HungerShield co-founder Elizabeth DeRobertis, MS, RD, CDN, CDE, shares the following key tips to lose weight, control appetite or simply avoid weight gain this summer:

1) ?Prioritize where you want to spend your calories,? says DeRobertis. ?In reality, not every calorie holds the same importance to you. Decide where you want to spend your calories, and then balance out your other choices with lower calorie foods. Also, be a detective and find extra calories in your day that can be cut out, especially if you know youll be indulging in extra summer-time events. Are you eating too much after work? Are you having too many snacks after dinner? Once you find the culprit, make a plan!?

2) ?Make your food environment safe. This includes your home, your car and your workplace. Plan ahead to have healthy foods on hand. Throw out foods that are too high in calories or too tempting to overeat. Calculate the MPD ? Maximum Potential Damage, this means the calories in the entire package of something (think cookies, chips, nuts). These foods can have a maximum potential damage of over 2000 calories per package! If you are at risk of eating it all in one sitting ? it is a high risk food and doesn?t belong in your safe food environment. We are faced with enough temptation everywhere else!?

3) Dont drink empty calories. ?Drinking a soda wont help you to eat less, but it will add at least 200 calories into your day,? says DeRobertis. Summertime BBQs also introduce more mixed drinks and alcohol. Calories can add up quickly! ?Drink primarily water, seltzer and other calorie-free drinks. Choose a piece of fruit instead of drinking juice. Our HungerShield Drink Mix only has 40 calories and can be easily added to water as a refreshing and filling alternative.?

4) Burn calories. ?You dont need to run a marathon, but you should have some consistent form of daily activity. Now that the weather is nice, no excuses! Try a pedometer and challenge yourself to increase your daily steps. My patients have been having great success with new technology motivating them to exercise more, many who come to see me love the FitBit or track their daily walks using apps like mapmyrun.? However you choose to move, make this an appointment you cant miss.

5) Turn on your internal GPS & recalculate quickly! Get back on track and move forward. ?Life happens there will be times you will eat more than you plan,? says DeRobertis. ?If you let a bad meal turn into a bad day, a bad day turn into a bad weekend, and a bad weekend turn into a bad week, you are going down a damaging path. Think about a GPS, you put in your destination and it tells you how to get there, if you go off track, it doesn?t say ?you screwed up, so don?t go there? it says ?recalculate,? and as long as this happens right away, your destination time may not change, or you may lose just 1 minute. The same thing goes for weight loss. The key is to recalculate and get back on track right when you fall off, and you will achieve your goals!?

Tips On Earning Money In Private Real Estate With Gasoline Stations

Buying a commercial property, for instance a gas station, is totally different than buying a house, so don?t treat them as identical transactions. The following advice will help you get the best deal on your property.

Take plenty of pictures of the building when you purchase gas station business holdings. Your pictures should portray any damage or defect in the property. Common things you should look for include any cracks or holes in walls, and damages to the carpeting.

When looking for commercial real estate properties to house your business, keep in mind that size is among the biggest factors. If you don?t invest in commercial property that allows for growth, your business is going to be hunting for a new home again within a few short years.

When you want to invest in apartment complexes, remember that small properties sometimes come with more problems than larger properties; because of this, some seasoned professionals in this industry suggest not investing in properties with less than 10 units. However, each opportunity and property is unique, and you should allow your investigation of a specific property to influence your decision.

Always check the credentials of the inspectors you hire. This is especially true of people who work with insect or pest removal, as there are many non-accredited people working in these fields. Staying on top of this will help you avoid issues after the deal is completed.

Distinct among the individual risks of those who invest in commercial real estate is fluctuation in interest rates. The current economy makes rates fall and rise with unpredictability, and can leave investors susceptible to majorly increased interest rates. When you are shopping for commercial property, make sure you consider the long term.

While searching through different properties, make a checklist of each tour you went on. Accept responses to the initial proposals, but don?t go further than that unless you inform the property owners. Do not fear letting the owners know that you are interested in other properties. Letting this fact slip may even result in your getting a more lucrative deal.

Know that there are many different kinds of brokers when it comes to commercial real estate. For example, some brokers represent landlords as well as tenants, while others only work with tenants. Consider hiring a broker who only works with tenants. This type of broker may have more experience with helping tenants successfully enter the commercial real estate market.

There are a lot of different kinds of real estate agents. A full service broker works with both the tenants and the landlord. Some agents represent only the tenants. Consider hiring a tenant-only broker as he?ll have the most experience in dealing with situations such as yours.

As has already been stated, the purchase of commercial property can be a very profitable investment. Be sure to try the tips in this article so that you can best succeed, and stay away from well-documented pitfalls.

At this moment, if it turns out you might really like to come across a bit more with regard to buying a gas station for sale, make sure you have a look to find further insights => HowToBuyaGasStation

The Beginner's Guide to Online Sweepstakes | Kids | Parenting ...

Sweepstakes are generally considered a casual activity that people participate in to test their luck. If they find themselves on the winning side of the contest, their prize can vary from tickets to a concert all the way to a new home. However, as with most things based online, knowing a few elements prior to participating can not only increase your chance of success, but ensure no unforseen consequences come to fruition.

Pepsi Billion Dollar Sweepstakes logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

As someone just getting into the sweepstakes scene, there are a few elements to consider prior to just jumping in. From knowing where to get sweepstakes help to being able to identify a legitimate opportunity over a scam, there are important factors that play into a successful entry. Below are a few of the most important of these elements that will help lead to a successful start in your sweepstakes playing endeavors.

Be Aware Of Where Your Information Goes

The first thing to be completely aware of when entering an online sweepstakes is the information you are required to enter. Most Internet based sweepstakes will require you to fill out a questionnaire or provide at least some basic information about yourself. Whether you simply enter your name and email address or your home address, knowing where that information is going and how it will be used is vital to ensuring your own privacy.

In most cases, you can read the fine print that is located on the entry page you are filling out to get a little more insight as to where your information goes. Additionally, some sweepstakes provide a questions and answers section that will generally fulfill any major questions that an entrant might have.

Pay Close Attention to Sweepstakes Terms

Whether you are entering a contest to win a new vehicle or for a special binder to better plan your couponing strategy, there are always extensive terms and conditions you should never neglect to read up on. These terms generally touch on who the contest is being hosted by, where your information goes and the steps you must take to complete the sign up process.

Don?t Be Overzealous From the Start

While it can be exciting to get involved with online sweepstakes, do not overwhelm yourself from the start. Begin slowly with only a few entries at a time, then ramp up your efforts as you become more familiar with the process. This will help neutralize any prospect of you getting frustrated and perhaps giving up before getting the chance to win anything.

As someone who is considering signing up for one or more online sweepstakes, consider the above elements as you come to those entry pages. High-Tech Shortcut To Greek Yogurt Leaves Purists Fuming

A supermarket's dairy case with shelves of yogurt

Benjamin Morris

America's food companies are masters of technology. They massage tastes and textures to tickle our palates. They find ways to imitate expensive foods with cheaper ingredients.

And sometimes, that technological genius leads to controversy.

A case in point: Greek yogurt, one of the trendiest foods in the country right now ? "the Jeremy Lin of food products," says the Los Angeles Times. Some yogurt companies are climbing onboard the Greek yogurt bandwagon with new ways to achieve that characteristically thick Greek yogurt texture. And traditional makers of Greek yogurt don't like it one bit.

?

Among the critics is Hamdi Ulukaya, founder of the company Chobani and perhaps the country's No. 1 cheerleader for Greek yogurt.

Hamdi is Turkish, but Greece and Turkey share a common tradition of yogurt-making, as it turns out. Seven years ago, he founded Chobani. Today, it's America's biggest maker of Greek yogurt.

Ulukaya says the secret of his success is simplicity. "We want to make yogurt the way it was meant to be," he says. His yogurt, he says, is exactly the same as what his mother made by hand back home in Turkey.

Except that now, he's making 1 million pounds of it every day in a factory in upstate New York.

Hamdi Ulukaya, founder of the yogurt company Chobani, says making Greek yogurt using thickening agents is cheating. Enlarge Dan Charles/NPR

Hamdi Ulukaya, founder of the yogurt company Chobani, says making Greek yogurt using thickening agents is cheating.

Dan Charles/NPR

Hamdi Ulukaya, founder of the yogurt company Chobani, says making Greek yogurt using thickening agents is cheating.

He takes me to the factory, a jungle gym of stainless steel pipes and tanks and loud machinery. One room is full of machines that spin the yogurt and squeeze out the liquid to strain it.

Ulukaya treats these machines like trade secrets. He won't let me take a picture of them. They're a critical piece of his booming business, "and it's not easy to get them," he says. "It takes a year to get them. So you have to plan ahead in order to make it."

Which brings us to the problem facing the rest of the industry. Other companies have watched Greek yogurt take over nearly a quarter of the total yogurt market in just the past five years. They wanted to get into this profitable market segment too, but they didn't have those machines.

So they called in food scientists like Erhan Yildiz, who is head of research on dairy products at a company called Ingredion. He knows yogurt ? he's Turkish, too. Yildiz and his colleagues set about finding a way to make it without those expensive straining machines.

They measured the firmness and thickness of those Greek yogurts, and also some attributes that you may not have heard of ? "residual mouth coating," "meltaway" and "jiggle."

"This is almost like fingerprinting a product. That combination of key attributes really identifies what that product is all about," he says.

To duplicate the Greek yogurt, they started with regular yogurt, then added different versions of starch, obtained from corn or tapioca. As they tweaked the quality and quantity of added starch, they kept measuring those key attributes. "If you can measure something, you can manipulate it," says Yildiz.

They arrived at a solution, a "formulated" Greek yogurt that Yildiz says comes pretty close to the original strained version. It's on store shelves now, although Yildiz isn't allowed to say exactly which yogurt manufacturers use his new ingredient.

But you can figure it out. During a recent visit to Safeway, I found that Fage's plain Greek yogurt contained no added thickeners. Safeway's Lucerne brand of Greek yogurt, however, contained milk protein concentrate (something that's commonly obtained from the leftover whey at cheese factories) and organic cornstarch. Yoplait's Greek yogurt also contained milk protein concentrate.

Yildiz sees nothing wrong with this. Authentic Greek yogurt, he says, is what you make of it.

But Chobani's Ulukaya calls such products cheap imitations. "That ruins the expectation in the consumer's mind of how pure and simple this product is."

He says the problem is there's no legal definition of Greek yogurt, any more than there's a legal definition of, say, a Greek wedding. "There's no protection around it. You could make a bowl of macaroni, call it Greek yogurt, and nobody could do anything to you. Which is sad!"

Now, there is a legal definition of yogurt. It's a "standard of identity" of yogurt, put out by the Food and Drug Administration.

It says, for instance, that yogurt has to be made from milk and bacterial culture. But that standard is 30 years old, and its interpretation has been the subject of debate. The version that was originally published in 1981 did not allow the addition of thickening agents. But after the industry protested, the FDA "stayed" that section of the regulation.

Most yogurt companies say that you can add starch or concentrated milk protein to their product and still legally call it yogurt, although a newly filed class-action lawsuit disputes this interpretation.

As for whether the yogurt is Greek, though ? that seems to be a question for the philosophers.

Wii U: Can the GamePad Change Console Game Design? | Dork Shelf

Project P-100 Pic 02

Project P-100 (working title) (Nintendo, Platinum Games)

Much of the recent excitement (and trepidation) over the upcoming Nintendo Wii U has focused on the new types of gameplay experiences the tablet-like GamePad creates. As much as new gameplay is important and interesting, new forms of gameplay may not be the Wii U?s biggest contribution to console gaming. Rather, it might be new ways of designing basic game necessities like in-game menus, inventory systems, in-game cameras and the like.

Take Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition as an example. On the Wii U Arkham City looks almost identical to what we?ve already seen on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. However, the menu and inventory system is now accessed through the GamePad?s touchscreen. Every upgrade and gadget is part of a touch sensitive menu system where tapping a gadget?s icon allows Batman to use the corresponding gadget. In terms of new gameplay the touch menu is rather shallow, but in terms of unique console game design this kind of touch menu is potentially more intuitive and more fluid than using analogue sticks.

Are touchscreen menus a necessary addition to console gaming? No, we have all managed to navigate menus on consoles without much difficulty. And yet, experiencing something familiar in a new way can breathe new life into the familiar. In this sense, the GamePad?s function as menu and inventory screen is not so much a revolution of those basic gaming elements but more a new iteration of those elements that can offer a greater variety of menu design and greater ease of access to those menus.

Arkham City Armored Pic 01

Players manage their inventory and activate the B.A.T. mode via the touchscreen. (Nintendo/Rocksteady/WB Games)

For example, if an inventory screen remains open on the GamePad while you play the main part of an action game on the TV you may not need to pause the action to select a new weapon or item since the inventory is already open. This rather simple use of the GamePad can keep the main action going without having to slow it down to a literal pause in order access essential menus.

However, Arkham City: Armored Edition also exposes how developers can use the GamePad for gimmicky game design. Case in point is the new ?B.A.T.? mode, a ?Batman on steroids? mode that allows the player to punch enemies with greater force. This could have offered some interesting gameplay but unfortunately to activate it, the player needs only to press a button on the GamePad?s touchscreen.

Activating special powers by simply pressing an additional button on the GamePad does not make much sense for a game like Arkham City?especially since the game played fine on current gen consoles without needing any extra buttons. But beyond this simple application, consider how game design could change with the ability to simply create new buttons. Games on the Wii U are not necessarily tied to one basic controller layout; developers can now create specific button layouts on the touchscreen for specific games.

As well, the ability to use face buttons, swipe mechanics, and touchscreen buttons may allow developers to create some unique combo systems. Pulling off impressive combos using the basic button configuration of a traditional controller is a sign of skill, but what will combos look like on a controller that can offer new types of touch sensitive buttons? Would such a controller reduce the skill needed to pull off certain moves? For example, rather than memorizing a complicated set of button presses to pull off a major combo a player can just press a single ?special combo? button on the touchscreen? On the other hand, is there a potential for crazier button combinations allowing different player skill-sets to emerge?

Project P-100 Pic 01

Project P-100 while using the Wii U GamePad (Nintendo, Platinum Games)

Button layout and menu navigation are key aspects of gaming that the Wii U can alter, but the Wii U can also alter how in-game cameras are designed. Take for instance Platinum Games? Project P-100, an action game presented in an isometric view where the player controls a large group of heroes trying to stop an alien invasion. Here, the GamePad is used for some literal shifts in perspective that shows how a dual screen set-up can change the way in-game cameras work.

When we entered a building the action shifted from the TV screen to the GamePad. The perspective also shifted from an isometric view to an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective. The TV still displayed the main isometric view and we needed to use both screens to solve a puzzle where manipulating levers inside the building (on the GamePad) altered numbers on the top of the building (seen on the TV screen).

The shift in screens and perspective was a bit disorienting but at least Project P-100, as opposed to Arkham City Armored Edition, experiments with the GamePad to showcase how to create unique designs, specifically by showing new ways of using in-game cameras and perspective.

PP-100 shows how the GamePad can present in-game environments in more experimental ways by using the second screen to create previously impracticable or impossible designs. And while it uses the second screen and dual perspectives in a ?functional? way ? i.e. to solve a puzzle ? the dual screen functionality could also offer new artistic possibilities for games as visual works of art.

New ways of creating in-game menu systems, button layouts, and in-game cameras does not sound as exciting as brand new gameplay. However, offering new ways of presenting and accessing basic elements of game design may have broader implications for console gaming than any new gameplay. With both Microsoft?s SmartGlass and Sony?s PS3-toVita Cross Play integrating touchscreen controls into their consoles (albeit in a less permanent manner that Nintendo), perhaps the very basic elements of the games we play are going to change.

The problem is that we have seen little more than gimmicks and basic mini-games for the GamePad. So, it might be that the Wii U will become a gimmicky device known more for frustrating game design than innovative, practical or artistic applications. However, in the right hands, maybe the new ways of presenting the basic elements of a game that the Wii U offers will generate worthwhile and exciting game design.

Chavez's gasoline rationing plan causes uproar

(AP) ? As home to the world's cheapest gasoline, Venezuela has long had to contend with the hemorrhaging of supplies as smugglers haul gas across the border to cash in where the fuel costs far more.

In neighboring Colombia, drivers pay 40 times as much as Venezuelans to tank up ? $1.25 a liter ($4.73 a gallon), compared to 3 U.S. cents a liter (11 cents a gallon).

So much gasoline is being taken out of Venezuela illegally that President Hugo Chavez's socialist government imposed rationing on motorists in one state bordering Colombia last year, and now it's touched off a furor in a second border state by announcing it will ration gasoline there, too.

"We transport workers are not to blame for this scourge," said Olivio Fernandez, a bus driver in Maracaibo, which is Venezuela's second-largest city with 2 million inhabitants. It's also the capital of Zulia state, where the expanded rationing is planned and where Chavez planned a Saturday visit for his re-election campaign.

Drivers will have microchip-embedded stickers affixed to their windshields to regulate purchases, just as motorists have been required to do in neighboring Tachira state for the past year.

Rationing in Tachira, home of the busiest Colombia-Venezuela border crossing, varies with a motor vehicle's size, location and use. Private automobiles in the border town of San Cristobal are limited to buying no more than 42 liters (11 gallons) a day, for example, while buses are limited to 150 liters (40) gallons.

Announced two weeks ago, Zulia's rationing was supposed to have gone into effect next month. But after heated criticism from local officials, the government decided to postpone the plan, saying it will start no later than August 2013 but suggesting it could be implemented before that.

Oil analysts say the new rationing may indicate something graver than a contraband problem, noting the anger-inducing plan was announced in an opposition-dominated state just three months before the presidential election. The measure could mean that production and refining troubles are worsening in the less-than-transparent state-run petroleum industry, the analysts say.

Venezuela is a major oil exporter but its refining capacity is limited, so the government buys gasoline from the United States, losing money by then selling it at home for almost nothing. Those imports have been steadily rising since 2009. In April, Venezuela imported 54,000 barrels a day of U.S.-refined gasoline, a 38 percent rise over the same month a year earlier, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The Chavez government has not explained why the gasoline imports from the United States, the principal market for Venezuelan crude, continue to climb and the press office of state-owned oil company PDVSA did not respond to repeated requests by The Associated Press for an explanation.

Ramon Espinasa, a Georgetown University economist, blames "operational problems" at some Venezuelan refineries as well as rising demand from power plants built in the past two years that burn gasoline and diesel fuel.

"They're not producing specialized (petroleum) products and must import finished products," Espinasa said.

Venezuela devoted 830,000 barrels of crude a day to its domestic market from April through June, the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates. The Chavez government says it produces a total of 3 million barrels a day, but independent sources such as OPEC put Venezuela's output at 2.3 million barrels.

Chavez made reference to the new rationing measures for Zulia, one of 24 Venezuelan states, in a campaign speech July 13, saying it is meant to prevent lines at gas stations.

"It's not rationing," he said. "It's a means of control, to give everyone gasoline, because the gasoline here is practically free, so the idea is to give everyone what they need."

Eight months ago, authorities imposed gas rationing in two Zulia towns on the border with Colombia's Guajira state, long a major waystation for all manner of smuggled goods from incoming cigarettes and liquor to outgoing cocaine.

The rationing has cut into the earnings of local bus and taxi drivers, who are allowed to buy 100 liters (26 gallons) a day. The response has been a black market in which gasoline is sold by the side of the road in jerry cans for twice the regular price.

The announcement that Maracaibo would be next prompted immediate rejection by the political opposition and transport unions. The opposition is demanding rationing be put to a referendum, and Chavez's presidential opponent, Henrique Capriles, says he'll abolish rationing if elected.

"Zulia is the best state producer of oil in Venezuela and we don't understand why because of the government's shortcomings it gets the blame," said a state lawmaker, Eliseo Fermin.

He said big-time smugglers are responsible for most of the contraband gasoline leaving the country.

"It's a business that the armed forces permit," Fermin said. Venezuela's National Guard controls the borders and the political opposition accuses it of allowing tanker trucks full of gasoline into Colombia.

Espinasa estimates as many as 100,000 barrels are smuggled out of Venezuela every day, representing a loss of some $5 billion a year.

Only small-time smugglers are ever arrested.

The editor of the Caracas opposition newspaper Tal Cual, Teodoro Petkoff, says the big smugglers aren't just using tanker trucks but also ships, ferrying the cut-rate gasoline to Caribbean islands.

Venezuela's petroleum minister, Rafael Ramirez, traveled to Maracaibo this week to discuss the dispute but didn't back down, although he didn't give any details on what the daily per-vehicle limit would be or set any date for when rationing might take effect.

He said the imposition of rationing in Tachira state and the two border towns in Zulia has cut gasoline smuggling by 56 million liters (15 million gallons) a month, saving the government about $400 million a year.

Oral immunotherapy shows promise as treatment for egg allergy

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2012) ? Giving children and adolescents with egg allergy small but increasing daily doses of egg white powder holds the possibility of developing into a way to enable some of them to eat egg-containing foods without having allergic reactions, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health.

The study results will appear online in the July 19th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"Children with egg allergy are at risk for severe reactions if they are accidentally exposed to egg-containing foods," said Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). "Currently, the only way to prevent these reactions from occurring is for these children to avoid foods that contain eggs. While this relatively small study provides encouraging new information, it is important for the public to understand that this experimental therapy can safely be done only by properly trained physicians."

The study is one of several federally funded trials of oral immunotherapy (OIT), an approach in which a person with food allergy consumes gradually increasing amounts of the allergenic food as a way to treat the allergy. Because OIT carries significant risk for allergic reactions, these studies are all conducted under the guidance of trained clinicians. Symptoms of allergic reactions can range from mild (hives, redness and itchiness of the skin) to severe (swelling of the back of the throat, trouble breathing, drop in blood pressure, and faintness or dizziness).

The trial was conducted by the NIAID-supported Consortium of Food Allergy Research (CoFAR) at clinical sites in Baltimore; Chapel Hill, N.C.; Denver; Little Rock, Ark.; and New York City.

The goals of the study were to determine if daily egg OIT reduced or eliminated participants' allergic responses to egg protein and if it did, whether or not the benefit persisted after therapy was stopped for four to six weeks.

The CoFAR study enrolled 55 children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 years who had egg allergy, one of the most common food allergies seen in children. Participants were randomly assigned either to the treatment group, which received egg OIT (40 participants), or to the control group, which did not (15 participants). Both groups were followed for 24 months.

Participants received a daily dose of egg white powder or cornstarch powder (placebo) at home. Researchers gradually increased the dose of egg or placebo powder every two weeks until the children in the egg OIT group were eating the equivalent of about one-third of an egg every day.

Participants came to the clinic to have three oral food challenges, at 10 months, 22 months and 24 months, with the maximum challenge equivalent to one egg. They passed the challenge if they had either no symptoms or only transient symptoms not directly observable by a doctor, such as throat discomfort. Participants failed the challenge if they had a symptom that could be observed by a doctor, such as wheezing.

After 10 months, none of the participants who received placebo passed the challenge, but 55 percent of those on egg OIT did. After 22 months of egg OIT, researchers gave a second oral food challenge to all of the children in the treatment group. At this food challenge, 75 percent of those on egg OIT passed.

"At the beginning of the study, most of the participants were highly allergic to egg, but after months of daily egg OIT, we found that many of them could eat more than a whole egg without having a reaction," said A. Wesley Burks, M.D., chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, one of the study's lead authors.

"Reducing these kids' allergic response to egg also lessened parental anxiety over how their children might react if accidently exposed to egg at school or at someone else's house," added Stacie Jones, M.D., professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, another lead author on the study.

To determine if egg OIT had any long-term benefit on treating the children's food allergy, the participants who passed the 22-month test were completely removed from egg OIT for four to six weeks and then rechallenged at 24 months. Eleven of the original 40 children (about 27 percent) passed this third food challenge. None of the children from the placebo group were retested because they had failed the prior food challenges. The 11 children who passed the third test were allowed to eat egg or egg-containing foods in their normal diets as frequently or infrequently as they chose. At a one-year follow-up, they reported no symptoms.

According to the study authors, these results indicate two types of benefits. First, the majority of the study children could be safely exposed to egg while on egg OIT. Second, a small group of children -- approximately one-fourth -- were able to eat egg in their regular diets even after stopping OIT for four to six weeks.

"Although these results indicate that OIT may help resolve certain food allergies, this type of therapy is still in its early experimental stages and more research is needed," said Daniel Rotrosen, M.D., director of the NIAID Division of Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation, which oversees CoFAR. "We want to emphasize that food OIT and oral food challenges should not be tried at home because of the risk of severe allergic reactions."

This work was funded by NIAID, NIH, under grant numbers U19AI066738 and U01AI066560, and the National Center for Research Resources and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, NIH, under grant numbers UL1RR024128, UL1RR025005, UL1RR025780, UL1RR029887, and UL1RR029884. The clinicaltrials.gov identifier for the study Oral Immunotherapy for Childhood Egg Allergy is NCT00461097.

I have had a blog for my business since circa 2005. Back when the term "business blog" was a new thing. The web may have accelerated with progressively new and exciting tools to engage, connect, and promote your business, but the blog still remains an important hub for all that activity. Not convinced? Let this expert turn you from skeptic to believer.

Don?t quite get the connection between consistent, quality blog posts and more $$ in your pocket? That?s okay; you?re not alone. Many entrepreneurs I speak with are still not clear about the benefits of blogging.

Immigration officials use tattoos to evaluate visa applications ...

Tattoos can be used to express affection, personal identity and group membership, among other things. But it is their ability to signal gang affiliation that is causing problems for immigrants seeking green cards. Applicants for lawful permanent residency are finding it increasingly difficult to convince State Department and immigration officials that their tattoos are nothing more than harmless ink instead of the markings associated with criminal organizations.

In recent years, the federal government has aimed to block the entrance of immigrant gang members into the U.S. One of the measures immigration officials use is whether the green card applicant has certain tattoos known to be prominent among various gangs and criminal organizations. While a State Department representative said that a tattoo alone is insufficient to turn down a visa applicant, some tattooed immigrants with no prior criminal history have had their applications rejected.

In some cases, rejection can mean that families are divided and one parent must raise the couple's children without the other's aid and income. For example, one immigrant traveled to Mexico to complete his green card application. But State Department officials denied his application and have prevented him from returning to his wife and children in the U.S. because he has tattoos that authorities consider to be indicators of gang membership.

The man, however, avers that he is not in a gang. A criminal background check from his home state of Colorado reveals no arrests. He has the tattoos simply because he thought they looked good. His fate is not unlike that of a number of other immigrants, whose visa applications have been denied seemingly on the basis of a few lines of ink.

One expert on gangs notices a problem with the government's approach to using tattoos as a potential marker of a person's criminal tendencies. Some supposedly gang-marking tattoos have been adopted by broader segments of the population. Many immigrants will therefore find their green card applications rejected despite their lack of gang membership.

Fighting a rejected application can be difficult and can require persistent effort. In some instances, legal action may be necessary. Some immigrants have already initiated legal proceedings in federal court to challenge the decision of immigration officials.

Housing Starts June 2012: New Home Construction Rises to ...

WASHINGTON -- U.S. builders broke ground on the most new homes and apartments in nearly four years last month, the latest evidence that the housing market is recovering.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that housing starts rose 6.9 percent in June from May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 760,000. That's the highest since October 2008.

Single-family housing starts, which account for more than 70 percent of new residential construction, rose for the fourth straight month to a two-year high. Apartment starts, which can be volatile, increased after falling in May.

The number of permits to build homes, a sign of future construction, fell 3.7 percent to 755,000. But that's down from May's level, which was the highest since Sept. 2008.

And permits to build single-family homes edged up to the highest level since March 2010. Permits to build apartments declined.

"This was a good report overall," said Martin Schwerdtfeger, an economist at TD Bank. He noted that permits remain high, which "suggests that the momentum in building activity observed in recent months should carry forward."

Single-family housing starts rose in every region of the country last month. Total starts, which include apartments, jumped 37 percent in the West and 22 percent in the Northeast, while falling in the Midwest and South.

Despite the gains, the level of housing starts and permits are roughly half what economists consider healthy.

Still, the beleaguered housing market is showing modest gains while the rest of the economy has weakened. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke highlighted the improvement in an otherwise gloomy report to Congress on the economy Tuesday.
