Cadmium Increases Breast Cancer Risk | TopNews United States

As per a recent research, which has been published in the Cancer Research, it has been revealed that dietary cadmium can cause breast cancer. Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, said that dietary cadmium is a chemical, which is found in fertilizers used to protect agricultural plants from insects.

Lead researcher Agneta ?kesson was of the view that some of common sources of dietary cadmium are bread and other cereals, potatoes, root crops and vegetables. The researchers fear that if people keep on having agricultural products high in dietary cadmium then it can cause them several diseases.

In order to reach the result, Agenta and team conducted a survey of more than 55,987 women for 12 years. The survey was based on a certain parameter like particular thing women like to eat, exposure to dietary cadmium, etc. They followed women for 12 years and found that out of 55,987 women, 2,112 had developed breast cancer.

In addition, it has also been revealed that there was a 21% increased risk to women who were exposed to dietary cadmium and the risk was found to be increased further by 7% in case of women who were obese.

"It's possible that this healthy diet to some extent can counteract the negative effect of cadmium, but our findings need to be confirmed with further studies. It is, however, important that the exposure to cadmium from all food is low", said Agenta.

Agenta explained that cadmium is found in the environment as well as in many farm fertilizers and it can enter into plants and further gets passed onto humans. Health experts are of the view that cadmium can have estrogen like properties, which increases the risk of breast cancer growth.
